OT: The News Thread

The whole point of owning IP is that you can do whatever you want with it. Pull it on a whim, to save the planet, or anything in between. It's that artist's choice whether or not to provide you with the convenience of accessing their library on your preferred streaming platform.

I actually artists and athletes took principled stands like this, at the expense of their own bank accounts, more often. Not less.

Surely you see the difference between "Greedo shot first" and "your highest paid star is pumping vaccine misinformation"?
Yes. The Greedo thing is far more egregious. Joe Rogan believes this shit. I don't agree with it, I have lost a ton of respect for him over it. I just don't think shows need to be cancelled just because you disagree with them. If that's where we're heading, everybody is going to get cancelled eventually.

If Neil Young cares so much about the issue, a far more effective way to get his message out there would be to go on the Joe Rogan show.

You can't cancel Spotify just because you don't like one piece of content on there. Otherwise, they should be put out of business for streaming Nickelback albums.

Neil is actually canceling himself.

Mate, this is a mess. Neil isn't telling spotify to cancel Joe. He's making a decision that he doesn't want to be aligned with a brand that does business with Joe. That's a completely normal business decision that corporations and IP holders do every day.

And no, Neil shouldn't go on Rogan and pointlessly debate Joe about it. Debate what? Joe argues with fucking doctors on his show about this shit, Neil Young is going to go on and change his mind? The point of this move for Neil is to disassociate himself with the Rogan brand.

You're still struggling with how far gone your boy is.

Well he is saying cancel Joe Rogan, or I'm taking my ball and going home.

No.

"I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them,” he wrote. “Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”

“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform,” he continued.

Like...are people just discovering now that Neil Young is very much not an apolitical musician?

And it's not like Joe Rogan is just some other random dude who happens to be on Spotify. He's the guy that Spotify chose to make the centerpiece of their brand with that $100M deal, and they've stood by him since then no matter what ridiculous and dangerous shit he's said.

If that's enough to make Neil Young not want to be associated with their platform, I say that's fair enough.
