OT: The News Thread

August/early Sept is the best for camping. cooler at night, bugs gone, great during the daytime
I'm a bit of a sucker for fall camping too. The colours around thanksgiving can be fucking incredible. And of course no bugs. Trade off is its a bit cooler and sometimes drops below zero overnight...

I've only ever gone with the hardcore type that make it as "comfortable" as possible. I still prefer a Ritz Carlton. It's not for me, but I do get it and accept that people enjoy it. I see people enjoying it all the time so obviously I'm the weird one!
Glamping > Camping

I'm including car camping and glamping in my categorization here.

Seriously, you should see the shit people set up these days. Like full fucking air mattresses in massive goddamn tents. Full BBQs, etc.

Yeah, I'm aware. I figured that didn't really fit the definition being discussed here.

i mean those aren't really camping for me.

i guess i actually don't even use the word camping, because that includes just driving some place and starting a fire.

for me it's Tripping that's the only satisfying way to do it. moving from campsite to campsite, and needing to carry everything you need along with you on your back.

metal has been used long enough in history to be legit i think.

so have lighters and matches for that matter.

Yes, I'm just pointing out that the caveman cosplay bit was misplaced.

Louis & Clark cosplay is a bit more apt here, but only if it's done the way you suggest. Which I'm going to bet is a very small percentage of campers doing that.

Caveman cosplay is exactly what it is. In reality it's a bunch of middle aged men getting high as fuck and tripping balls in the woods near a lake. Which is fine and I'm sure fun as fuck. But relax, you're not Bear Grylls.

hey i said cosplay.

and maybe it's a small percentage - but really if you're going even semi-deep into any of the major parks you're already going too far to carry much of the convenient stuff with you (and leaving the day campers far behind).

i've legit never even used a coleman stove. i remember my brother brought one once but couldn't get it to work.

But what if they go the whole way and drink their piss....for survival?

oh I'm with you 100%. I want to get into the backcountry.

but I guess I just wanted to express that there are midway options for folks not committed to the full experience.

and truthfully as I've gotten older I've found myself compromising more and more to do 'glamping' type things because the alternative is nothing at all.

I can respect people wanting to do old school camping and unplug from society for a bit, enjoy the quiet, cook over a fire, etc etc…

What I get a kick out of tho is the camping people do where their tent looks like an luxury airbnb cottage inside, raised beds, fully powered from a big battery pack etc, iPads going, an induction stove on hand, etc etc etc….that’s pure cosplay camping imo, and i don’t get the point of it at all other than trafficking in talking about your “rugged”weekend “camping” at work or something to cozy up to your Rogan bros over.

speaking for myself but I've done 5-day hikes where I carry a pad, a stove, and fuel. and I pack lighter on hikes than on canoe trips.

That would be me. If I'm with the right people, that's the best part of camping. The worst part is everything else. So this would make it at least enjoyable for me too!
