OT: The News Thread

my other bro keeps trying to take me hiking but not being able to be in a canoe on water is kind of a dealbreaker for me. it's my favorite part of tripping.

but total respect to hikers. every bit as badass as canoeing.
growing up I was pretty much exclusively a canoe tripper.

then I did my exchange in NZ and they just have the most incredible infrastructure for multi-day hikes. so that's where I really got into it. made it accessible for me as an exchange student. at one point I did 10 straight days trekking on the South Island (with a one night stopover in town to resupply).

and we have a couple super nice multi-day trails out here too that are worth it.

but yeah, canoe tripping >>>

My thing is if I’m going to be around people, I want to start my day off with a shower.

Morning dip is my first rule of camping.

Actually the very first rule is getting in the water first thing, before you even start.

The biggest mistake people make camping is trying to avoid getting wet. Trying to stay dry just makes everything annoying and uncomfortable.

Get in the water. Once you're wet, you don't have to worry about anything and can actually relax.

Sorta, yeah.

Have one buddy who’s family owns a remote parcel of land up North that’s all just back-country with no roads into it.

Past few years we’ve been heading out there on an annual fall trip and progressively building up a lodge there by hand with the materials on-hand in the woods. Then we snow-shoe back out there in the winter and stay there over a long weekend.
this is the way!

my boat clothes get wet. that is expected and okay. when I'm done canoeing for the day, I pull my camp clothes out of my dry bag. been a great system so far...

A lot more work building a fire than it is simply putting the kettle on (or an electric, of course).

an electric gooseneck kettle that brings it to & holds at my ideal pour over temp, was a life changer.

single push of a button and my water is ready when the beans are ground. Real life magic.

also the stupidest sounding “hack” of all time, but it’s also been a game changer for me, is my first cup is only a half cup so the coolness of the mug brings my first drinks to the ideal temp. Then by the time I fill #2, the Chemex has chilled it enough for it to also be at a flawless drinking temp.
