OT: The News Thread

That would be me. If I'm with the right people, that's the best part of camping. The worst part is everything else. So this would make it at least enjoyable for me too!

I feel like I’d either want to go on my own with just my dog, and treat it like a meditative experience fully & completely unplugging from society.

Or have a bunch of friends, drugs, etc and we all just get a big cabin(s) on the lake.

Re: mosquitos….has anyone found a great solution to overcoming/counteracting them?

I have whatever gene it is that makes them all flock to me to an absurd degree, to the point I can’t even properly enjoy my backyard/deck on the waterfront if there are any around at all…..and there’s currently a fuckload of them on PEI.

would improve my life tenfold if there’s a solution to them.

oh I'm with you 100%. I want to get into the backcountry.

but I guess I just wanted to express that there are midway options for folks not committed to the full experience.

and truthfully as I've gotten older I've found myself compromising more and more to do 'glamping' type things because the alternative is nothing at all.

i still draw a hard line on one thing - bringing a chair.

my brother thinks he's the baddest ass camper but he brings a chair and i mock him endlessly for it.

for me, once you have a comfy seat it's not even camping anymore.

my one real concession to modernity is bringing music with me. but only because music is life.

speaking for myself but I've done 5-day hikes where I carry a pad, a stove, and fuel. and I pack lighter on hikes than on canoe trips.

my other bro keeps trying to take me hiking but not being able to be in a canoe on water is kind of a dealbreaker for me. it's my favorite part of tripping.

but total respect to hikers. every bit as badass as canoeing.

they actually finally have something that works - the thermacell-style thingies legit do the trick.

are you bringing a cabin with you tho

Sorta, yeah.

Have one buddy who’s family owns a remote parcel of land up North that’s all just back-country with no roads into it.

Past few years we’ve been heading out there on an annual fall trip and progressively building up a lodge there by hand with the materials on-hand in the woods. Then we snow-shoe back out there in the winter and stay there over a long weekend.

ah ok so you're sleeping in a building. that makes more sense. tenting in -30 sounds insane to me.

Stay inside

I’m blessed that we have a house length sun porch overlooking the water….but I’m from the George Hamilton school of life where I want to look like a leather wallet in old age, and/or die of skin cancer.

I’m willing to take plenty of precautions in life, but the exhilarating confidence & and supercharged dosing of vitamin D that comes with a great tan cant be beat.

I mean Alone is the best show on TV and those people are all absolute badasses that I couldn't even dream of comparing to. Those guys have crazy skills.

Doing a four night backcountry canoe trip in warm weather isn't anything like that. Though you can make it more badass by doing tougher routes - and tbh you do feel like more of a champ the tougher the trip was.

this was what I was curious about…vaguely heard rumblings of something that works now but didn’t know if it was legit or just another gimmick.

will give it a whirl. 👌🏽

I have a pretty firm "I sleep under a roof" policy.

I'm fine with that roof being in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of cartel controlled territory, has wheels, made of tin, whatever.

But roof.

My thing is if I’m going to be around people, I want to start my day off with a shower.

you can buy things at canadian tire that you can burn that keeps them away. little scented coils.

or just use a smoldering egg carton, the smoke keeps 'em away

yeah I'm glad to say I've never done that
