OT: The News Thread

This whole reflex of tipping towards authoritarians when we're remotely inconvenienced instead of leaning into known data and plausible solutions over the last 10 years has me thinking similarly tbh. When the first real volleys of climate change start to land (north atlantic conveyor is probably the first big one), I think we're going to react very, very poorly to the lowered standards of living.

We act like the level of civilization we've achieved is permanent.
Because we in places like North America feel entitled to our standard of living. Never mind that most of the world lives in various stages of privation as long as we get to do whatever we want, whenever we want and (most importantly) however we want. It's the ultimate in white privilege.

Look at our friend Count. Lifelong Liberal voter....until his affluent lifestyle was inconvenienced by Covid and mask mandates. Now he thinks Meatball Ron should be President. His main complaints these days are the quality of the food in the first class airport lounge and how much legroom he has on the plane. The world's on fire you say? Meh. I'm going shopping.

My daughter and husband staying with his parents for the summer had to evacuate twice but no word yet from his parents about their place but they are trying to be hopefull.

This is a perfect example of the Kremlin’s delusions of grandeur. They resent unipolar world brought about by their defeat in the Cold War. They are vengeful and call for a new multi polar world order to restore their imperious greatness.

But this new order is already slowly emerging as demographic weight, economic power and technological diffusion are brought to bear. Except it doesn’t include Russia as one of the powers, does it.

Today’s lunar landing is right on the nose.
