OT: The News Thread

Some great cop talk in that video

“Uh, as a result the officer, uh, performed a traffic stop and, uh, addressed some traffic violations that were, um, occurring with that, uh, particular vehicle.”

In my dystopian nightmare scenario, frequent mega disasters and new realities (food/water scarcity, new pathogens ?) of an altered climate will result in a new feudal, oligarchic order of the super wealthy living in highly fortified gated “safe areas” where they and their families live, work and play. Protection will be provided by state of the art Wagner-like private militias.

Everyone else will live in a climate vulnerable, ravaged even, Thunderdome scenarios with authoritarian overlords, police states, no personal security, contingent well-being and random/uncertain violence and climate catastrophes. Investing in or planning for your family’s future will be a fool’s errand.

My (uninformed) understanding of Burning Man is that it was initially a festival for smelly hippies to get together, dress up in funny outfits (or nothing at all) and do copious amounts of drugs in the desert while looking at art installations.

And that in recent years it’s been increasingly taken over by rich kids, social media influencers and celebrities who roll in with massive air conditioned RV’s and/or set up opulent private camps.

If it was still just mostly the original smelly hippies in attendance this year, they probably would have put up with all the mud far better.

Yep just the fucking worst.

also I guess they learned the hard way that teslas aren’t designed for off roading.

It was still kind of cool 15 years ago when I first heard of it via a good friend who attended....but since then it slowly got invaded by tech bros and girls trying to reclaim their street cred/artistic side with the promise of lots of drugs and sex

All such festivals inevitably become this. Look at the two Woodstock reboots, especially the last one which devolved into Lord of the Flies by the end of the first day. And these reboots are also inevitably just corporate wank-fests. It's just an opportunity for grifters to make money. I doubt that the people who went to the original Woodstock would have wanted to go if it was The Woodstock Festival, brought to you by Mercedes-Benz. But someone who was a hippie at the original is probably the same boomer scumbag who now drives a Benz and would totally be promoting Woodstock 2023 if they thought there was money to be made off it.
