OT: The News Thread

This is a perfect example of the Kremlin’s delusions of grandeur. They resent unipolar world brought about by their defeat in the Cold War. They are vengeful and call for a new multi polar world order to restore their imperious greatness.

But this new order is already slowly emerging as demographic weight, economic power and technological diffusion are brought to bear. Except it doesn’t include Russia as one of the powers, does it.

Today’s lunar landing is right on the nose.

Putin has been throwing a 20 year long tantrum insisting that the rest of the world continues to apply the old rules so that Russia can remain a world power.

It's an economic power whose peers are Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and even that's being kind. It's more of a collection of regional economies competing with near geographic rivals. In the european sphere it was only the EU's gas station, in the south it was Turkey's subordinate on the black sea and in the east, not much more than a one stop shop for Chinese raw material purchases.

As a political power it's been gushing blood and losing influence for 30+ years with Belarus it's only real subordinate left and as a military power, well, it's currently the 2nd most powerful military in Ukraine and has proven that other than some early territory gains, it struggles to project power beyond it's borders. It's shown itself to be a huge step behind Nato spec equipment and training, the Black & the Baltic are no longer waters it can project power into and it's managed to reinvigorate Nato in a way most people thought impossible in 2019-2020.

It had bad cards and overplayed the shit out of them.

We are exactly here in the decline of human civilization:

Ivan Mordisco is a Colombian warlord with a cocaine empire and a bounty on his head. He is also doing more to protect the Amazon rainforest than almost anyone else on Earth.
Deforestation has plunged in the cattle ranching and coca growing region controlled by Mordisco’s guerrilla force after he took the unpopular decision of ordering local farmers to stop cutting down trees. This followed a request by the government of President Gustavo Petro, which has effectively persuaded a group that routinely guns down soldiers and police officers to take on the job of park rangers.

Destruction of the Colombian Amazon fell 76% in the first quarter from a year earlier, but environmentalists fear that outsourcing protection of the rainforest to violent outlaws is unlikely to produce lasting results. And as Mordisco prepares for peace talks with the Petro government, there is an implicit threat that he might reverse the early goodwill gesture and let the chainsaws roar again if he doesn’t get what he wants at the negotiating table.

The trees we need for the planet to remain liveable will only survive because some of them can grow cocaine that violent criminals can get rich off of.

The hero Gotham deserves....

Yes it's not an apples to apples comparison, but it's a rehash of an old point I've made re: Tesla

They had a big ass head start in the electric market and they're no sure thing to dominate it in the future, I'd actually bet against that. Other companies have caught up or are surpassing them in technology already.

I mean, was anything of value lost to the Canadian people?
I do enjoy the odd Bugle now and again but coke to think of it I can't remember the last time I had any. I've never had a Little Debby cake. I didn't even know they were in Canada. I've only ever seen them in the US. All frozen pizza is objectively awful and snot rags are snot rags.

So we humans invented the perfect straw, only to find out that plastic non-biodegradable suckers are bad for the environment. But despite sending a man to the moon over 50 years ago, the best replacement we could come up with are these garbage paper straws that totally suck (in terms of being useless, because actually sucking is their job)

But at least we can carry on in the knowledge that we're saving the planet, and --
