OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

You should listen to people with opposite views. Often times their opinions are just as valid as yours whether you agree with what they say or not.

It's like kicking someone's ass to protest violence. Makes no sense.

Or like calling someone a fag for dancing with your girlfriend.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Since she is a conservative. Ottawa U paid Pierre Rose to come and speak at the school. He is the convicted FLQ terrorist. I'm sure any number of Muslim terrorists would be welcome, at any Canadian university. Christian or Jewish terrorists though, need not apply.
:shrug

I'm trying to figure out if this is a joke, a parody, or a delusion. Or something else entirely.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Comments like "All terrorists are Muslim", "make them ride magic carpets"...and when challenged on that comment by a student saying she didn't have one, retorting "then ride a camel" is severe racism and by definition, hate speech.

I personally think hate speech laws are horse shit and that the "line" for what is considered free speech should be beyond that (count me in the camp that believes your freedom of speech ends at the tip of my nose....or the "you can't yell fire in a theatre" camp)...but currently in Canada "hate" speech is illegal.

However, this shouldn't cause Coulter's right to speak to be revoked (as in this case, they were...by the modern equivalent of yelling fire in a crowded theatre...a fire alarm being pulled, which is a crime in of itself.) It should though, have opened her up to criminal charges (or whatever ****ing redress the law has concerning hate speech....a human rights panel, gulag, death camp, stern talking to...whatever) had she broken Canadian law, and those who protested were well within their rights as long as they weren't breaking any other laws (trespassing on private property, vandalism, uttering threats, etc)....it's the morons who pulled the fire alarm that irk me here.

Coulter is a moron and I have no desire to hear anything that comes from her manly voice box. She's gone well past the point of deserving to have her views taken seriously by anyone concerned with living within a healthy, functioning civilization. But the idiots who pulled the fire alarms, or uttered threats or otherwise went past the boundaries of civil protest have done nothing but given her proponents ammunition.

Re: OT - The News Thread

The real tragedy here is that Coulter hasn't done anything illegal in Canada yet.

The U of O provost essentially told her to tone it down when she hadn't even delivered a speech. She was "guilty" before even committing a crime.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Coulter's the one that ran away crying because of all the mean things those students were saying.

talk to her.
Even you know this isn't the case.

Why would anyone subject themselves to an angry mob and false fire alarms? That issue could have easily fallen out of control...and who knows what would have happened.

I think that's a little harsh...The way I look at the letter from the Provost was as a necessary warning. Simple fact is that some of what she says in the U.S media would in fact be considered a crime in Canada, and ignorance of the law isn't an excuse. A controversial public speaker such as herself should be made aware of what can and cannot be said before she speaks here, if for no other reason than you protect her from herself.

Re: OT - The News Thread

She's very capable of understanding Canadian law. Hell, she had Ezra Levant by her side. He knows more about Canadian hate speech law than just about anyone.

This is a case of one University pencil pusher wanting to get his name in the paper.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Some interesting stuff going on with Wikileaks right now..."interesting" as in being detained by U.S officials and being under surveillance due to records they're releasing on April 5th.

For those of you unfamiliar with Wikileaks, they're basically where the deepest, darkest secrets of governments, corporations, NGO's, etc see the light of day. They should be applauded by people of all political stripes, they do a fantastic job.

well...on to the interesting part...

http://morgue.isprettyawesome.com/?p=1361

Sounds like the people behind Wikileaks are under some pressure. Since this is unlikely to turn up in your newspapers, I post it here to spread awareness.

Wikileaks has a mission of bringing hidden information to light, when it’s in the public interest. Wikipedia outlines their greatest hits, including Gauntanamo Bay procedure documents, scientology secrets, and net censorship lists. They come under fire sometimes for hosting material that probably isn’t much in the public interest, but overall they have contributed some compelling information to some fractious global arguments.

In the last 24 hours, their Twitter feed has contained some worrying content.

* WikiLeaks to reveal Pentagon murder-coverup at US National Press Club, Apr 5, 9am; contact [email protected]
* WikiLeaks is currently under an aggressive US and Icelandic surveillance operation. Following/photographing/filming/detaining
* If anything happens to us, you know why: it is our Apr 5 film. And you know who is responsible.
* Two under State Dep diplomatic cover followed our editor from Iceland to http://skup.no on Thursday.
* One related person was detained for 22 hours. Computer’s seized.That’s http://www.skup.no
* We know our possession of the decrypted airstrike video is now being discussed at the highest levels of US command.
* We have been shown secret photos of our production meetings and been asked specific questions during detention related to the airstrike.
* We have airline records of the State Dep/CIA tails. Don’t think you can get away with it. You cannot. This is WikiLeaks.

All those came out in a rush, then silence for hours. Might just be a timezone thing, with people sleeping, or maybe there’s been no news, or maybe everyone with access to the Twitter feed has been detained. I await more information.

UPDATE: “To those worrying about us–we’re fine, and will issue a suitable riposte shortly.” 8.22am NZ time.

UPDATE: Just noticed that the first tweet quoted, “WikiLeaks to reveal Pentagon murder-coverup” is gone from the feed. Now I wish I’d linked to all of them individually. Anyway, it was definitely there, and I think Linda is right that it is this previously-referred-to video

Here's their twitter feed for those of you who would like to stay tuned

Fair enough, but it's still a prudent warning considering her track record.

false fire alarms? oh the humanity.

the democratic congressmen subjected themselves to angry mobs to get this health care done.

If she wants to provoke the masses with inflammatory speech, she can't run away crying when she receives flak back.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Haven't seen anything posted about the ongoing church scandal(s). Is this rat zinger's shit ever starting to stink or what? It is almost incomprehensible that somebody so close to the church sex abuses was able to rise to the status of pope. Did they not vet this guy?

He is either one of the worst, most evil people in the world, or the biggest pussy ever.

Because between his history in the Hitler Youth and the fact that he very clearly actively helped to cover up the sexual abuse of countless minors literally all over the world.. this ****er's managed to make a mockery of the position he holds (and there are some pretty tough acts to follow in that regard).

How somebody can know about these abuses -- and do nothing but pretend that they never really happened -- and live with their self is beyond me. What a RAT zinger.

Re: OT - The News Thread

the guy is freakin' evil for sure.

his resemblance to the emporer is uncanny.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I am actually incredulous over the fact that between charges from Jews that the church turned a blind eye during the Holocaust, and claims of sex abuse cover ups... they decided to nominate a guy who served in the Hitler Youth and who headed the division (is that the right term?) of the church responsible for investigating/dealing with sex abuse cases.

what a farce.

Re: OT - The News Thread

did he really head the division? for how long? I had no idea.

I did hear some bishops getting angry at all the "persecution" the catholic church is facing, and complaining that "we're not the only ones who had child molestors" or something.

just evil.

Re: OT - The News Thread

from the New York Times:

The documents emerge as Pope Benedict is facing other accusations that he and direct subordinates often did not alert civilian authorities or discipline priests involved in sexual abuse when he served as an archbishop in Germany and as the Vatican’s chief doctrinal enforcer.

The Wisconsin case involved an American priest, the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy, who worked at a renowned school for deaf children from 1950 to 1974. But it is only one of thousands of cases forwarded over decades by bishops to the Vatican office called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, led from 1981 to 2005 by Cardinal Ratzinger. It is still the office that decides whether accused priests should be given full canonical trials and defrocked.

so.. yeah.. this guy was getting reports about all the abuse allegations. And dealt with most of them by turning a blind eye.

scum. total scum.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I wonder what kind of legs this can have.

Is there a process to dump a pope?

or maybe the whole church goes down?
