OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

So is Islam if you want to start pointing fingers. No man is infallible. There is not one religion that has not persecuted non-believers of said faith. Why do you argue with RKB? He's a waste of breath.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Big news in Prince Edward Island though folks. The Provincial Government has decided to pay " Live" With Regis and Kelly to come to the Island to broadcast 4 shows in July. Nice use of taxpayers dollars isn't it? Meanwhile, we don't have enough doctors. No emergency room to the east of Charlottetown (I live an hour east of). No triage. We are in dire need of new schools, the fisheries are dying fast as the world has decided that BlueFin Tuna are endangered, and the Lobster prices aren't worth catching them...Farmers every second year have problems with borders to the US....and the tourist industry has bottomed out with the US/global economy, yet our Premier, who felt it necessary to introduce canned beer to PEI to gain the public's vote (which causes more waste, on an Island that is miles ahead of most Canadian provinces for it's waste management program) also thinks that bringing Regis and Kelly here will do something to entice the people in the US, who haven't got jobs or houses, to come to PEI to spend what little they have left of their retirement nest eggs. MORON!

Re: OT - The News Thread

you don't know history.

catholicism came in at the heights of western civilization - the democratic, scientific Roman Empire - and brought it all the way down to the feudal, mystical Dark Ages.

As humanity still struggled to move forward, with such grand discoveries as Astronomy and Evolution and Biology, the catholic church did nothing but impede progress at every step.

Only after casting aside the cloak of religious mysticism did western civilization finally experience the Renaissance, getting it back on track and moving forward.

read a dang book.

you deeply, radically misunderstand the fall of rome if you claim that catholicism was the cause of its downfall.

Re: OT - The News Thread

to read this thread is to convince me all over again that there is a deep-seated hatred and bigotry against the catholic church, and it is the only acceptable target for "progressive lefties". any other religion or cultural group is off limits to "progressive lefties" except for catholics.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I hate mainstream Islam just as much as the Roman Catholic Church. The difference is that the latter had to eventually grow up out of adolesence while the 600 year younger brother has just entered that stage. It has nothing to do with being a "progressive lefty," although it is somewhat ironic that you're such a self-described right-wing individual and are defending Catholics when it's been the Italians that have been such a bastion of Liberal Party support for over 100 years.

Deserved.

But, I also rip on Islam, Scientology, Mormonism, etc, etc, etc, etc

Re: OT - The News Thread

Catholicism and it's children effect my life far more than any other belief system does.

Therefore, it gets the lions share of my attention and derision. It's proportional.

Re: OT - The News Thread

yeah, it's not like there's some guy in here moaning about persecution at every Tom Cruise jokes.

Hell, there was an in-depth discussion of drawing the Prophet Mohammed a few days ago and no one said a word.

Re: OT - The News Thread

While we're talking about crappy teachers and catholics, maybe someone could fill me in on something from before my time:

How the hell did the catholic schoolboard end up getting equal funding with the public and secular board? Why were there no charter challenges or similar?

-because catholic education is guaranteed by sec.93 of the constitution

-because catholic education has demonstrated a proven ability to better educate kids for less money than the public boards have been able to

-because it provides a choice for parents

-because around 40% of the province is still catholic

-because why would we change an ontario education system that ranks up near the top of systems in the world?

I guess what I'm asking is more why it's guaranteed in the constitution. Clearly they didn't START funding catholic schools because of your 2nd, 4th, and 5th reasons.

What was the impetus for the ontario government to start funding catholic schools?

Why was it not considered problematic in terms of the separation of church and state? I'm curious about the public discourse and events that led to the initial decision.
