OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

See -- I'm not convinced that this is what they wanted. Or at least, expected. They probably wanted to reign in somewhat, but this has gone to a whole new level.

Shatkins might just really really really suck at their jobs.

It was the worst timing possible. Just as the city is going nuts about playoff baseball and selling-out games and seeing the playoffs for the 1st time in over 2 decades, they bring Shapiro in. It was a disaster.
The wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Rogers is cheap for sure, but they've never been so cheap that Riccardi/AA had to value players solely and specifically because they were bodies that were cheap and under control for 7 years. They were cheap in the sense that they only spent top 10 in payroll once a decade instead of every year like they can afford to.

This is Tampa/Oakland shit, just minus the player evaluation.

Stroman was the first target and sources indicated the Twins were disappointed when Toronto didn’t give them a chance to match an offer they believed they could have outdone. The Blue Jays were rebuffed when they originally asked the Twins for either of their top prospects, Royce Lewis or Alex Kirilloff, and never called back before accepting a deal for two New York Mets pitching prospects.

I kinda think SWR belongs in the kirilloff caegory of prosepct tbh,

and royce is kinda all scouting so far - his performance really hasn't come close to his ranking.

SWR might be good in 5 years or so. I don't think I would expect him until he's at least 22. Vlad could be 2 or 3 years away from free agency at that point.

He's in A+ now.

Which means he's likely spending most of next year in AA or higher. Which puts him in the MLB picture pretty quickly.

I could be wrong, but I think Shapiro was actually hired before they got good.

Nah, not even close. SWR might be like a 50/50 shot to make it there someday, which is higher than most A-ball arms, but he's not there yet.

Kiriloff is 3yrs older than SWR and only one level higher....and not doing very well at that level, either.

Kiriloff was at SWR's levels last year, and also crushed it like SWR is, but was 2 years older.

A-Ball

Kirilloff (20, '18): 281pa, 8.5b%/16.7k%, .364bip/.333avg, .274iso, 176wrc+
SWR (18, '19): 78.1ip, 29.9k%/5.2b%, .356bip, 4.25era, 2.55fip, 2.29xfip

A+

Kirilloff (20, '18): 280pa, 5.0b%/13.9k%, .399bip/.362avg, .188iso, 168wrc+
SWR (18, '19): ???

AA

Kirilloff (21, '19): 291pa, 7.2b%/21.3k%, .342bip/.272avg, .109iso, 112wrc+
SWR: ??

Kirilloff projects as a corner OF defensively.

If SWR keeps up his dominance with the promotion to A+ the rest of this year, then I don't see any reason to rank them much differently at all.

That's my recollection too. Shapiro didn't actually take over until the conclusion of the 2015 season, but behind the scenes Rogers had already agreed to hire him and have him take over for Beeston at the conclusion of the season prior to Anthopoulos going out and making all of his big trades, and the team taking off afterwards.

His first meeting with AA was about a month after the trades, where he allegedly spent most of the meeting raking AA over the coals for all the precious prospects he traded away.

No wonder AA couldn't get out of here fast enough. "We had one of the best years in Jays history" "You set us back 33 years of control!!"
