Here's the problem with the "Shapiro was hired before the Jays got good" line of thought.
The Jays were a top 5 team in baseball the entire season, it just didn't show up in the W/L column for a while. All of the leading indicators that you can use the determine the quality of a team, the Jays were strong in. The W/L had already started to correct itself as well. Shapiro was hired on August 31, the Jays were 24-5 in the previous month. The Jays were 74-56 when Shapiro was hired, which is paced out as a 92-70 record.
So if the people at Rogers were looking at the club thinking that it wasn't very good, they're part of the ****ing problem. Medicore W/L driven by luck had already corrected itself.
