OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Yep. Human umps miss multiple calls every game. A robot ump misses a single call (maybe) and it's twitter-storm worthy.

The C was set up inside and didn't even try to frame it, plus the camera angle is misleading. I bet it didn't even miss by much.

Also read that that league uses older tech than MLB, so would assume with improved tech, you'd do a better job. Like, every broadcast shows the strike zone box, and I bet a pitch is mis-labeled on there no more than 1 game every 5. I do think if you have it, you need to give teams a number of challenges for those egregious calls with some sort of resolution for checking a backup camera within 10-15 seconds. But if it avoid all those cases where the ball is dead red and the ump calls it a ball, I'm game for it.

They're using a 2018 system in that league apparently and that pitch doesn't look nearly as bad as you'd think. Catcher set up on the insid, the camera is on the opposite perspective and when you slow down the video that is shot on a fucking potato, the pitch crosses the hitting area at knee height and just outside the catcher's knee.

Anyone who can watch that video and say that they know where the outer edge of the plate is, is fucking lying.

My money is on that pitch being a lot closer to the zone than people are acting like it was, and our way too human senses reacting to 1) Where the catcher caught it (which is a few feet behind the front of the strike zone) and 2) Where the momentum of the catchers arm took his glove.

Basically everything that makes us human and wrong waaaay more often than decently designed machines, is what's going on right now.

It’s a classic “missed his spot” call. The C was expecting inside and high and he missed down and away. Also this is an Indy league catcher. This would be called a ball by a human ump 100 times out of 100, but might actually be a strike. It takes time to adjust. Will be interesting to see what position catchers settle into once they’re more used to the system.

By the same token they can line up whenever the fuck they want without the fear of the ump getting confused.

Yeah, there's definitely some curious ways you might handle it. Like, if there's a runner on first, I wonder if there's a better way to set up to ready for a throw, without worrying about "receiving" the ball. I mean, you could even do something like having the C practically standing up if the other team is looking to bunt, so you don't have to waste time standing up to chase a short ball.

I expect that it will look very much the same with runners on or even with 2 strikes since the C still has to block the ball in the dirt. Otherwise they could stand, kneel, whatever.

Couple of tough losses against Tampa, who are just clearly the best team in the division (2 back of the Sox right now). Hopefully they can go into the break on a winning note tomorrow.

Robbie Ray goes against Rich Hill and I can’t believe Rich Hill is still pitching. Hill broke broke into MLB in 2005, the same year as Dustin McGowan, Aaron Hill, and Gustavo Chacin. Hill is actually one or two years older than all of them.

They’d both be upgrades, but there are some minor red flags with both. I’d probably take Plesac if the price is similar. Admittedly that’s partly because I think this season is a write off so it’s mostly about future value. One year of Berrios vs 4 of Plesac is a pretty easy call.

Plesac might not be any good, just ridiculously controlled and i assume we'd be signing Berrios if we traded for him.

My order of untouchables would be Martin, Manoah, then Moreno, i'd be willing to headline with anyone else, including Pearson
