OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

MLB draft is tonight. Jays lack a 2nd rounder so they lack the ability to take a tough to sign guy, or do their thing where they go underslot then take mega value in the 2nd. It's possible they go underslot and try to get mid round value. Name i hear alot linked to them is HS SP Anthony Solometo. Would be first ever HS SP ever taken by team
Kiley McDaniel’s latest mock on ESPN:

i

19. Toronto Blue Jays

Jay Allen, CF, John Carroll Catholic HS (FL), Florida commit

The Jays are tied most to Allen, Trey Sweeney, Ryan Cusick and Jud Fabian at this pick, with Tyler Black also mentioned and Thatcher Hurd and Hunter Parks among their targets with a later pick as well.

Callis/Mayo on MLB:

19. Blue Jays
Callis: Gunnar Hoglund, RHP, Mississippi
The Blue Jays figure to take a college player. Unless someone falls, it could come down to Hoglund, a top-10 choice before he blew out his elbow in May and had Tommy John surgery, and Eastern Illinois shortstop Trey Sweeney, who's becoming the consensus No. 5 college bat available. Left-hander Anthony Solometo is one high schooler who could factor here.

Mayo: Ryan Cusick, RHP, Wake Forest
Prep lefty Anthony Solometo could still figure into the conversation here, or they could go the high school hitter route with Joe Mack or Jay Allen, who gets mentioned quite a bit. But Cusick’s power stuff is tough to ignore.

Ray is nuts. Wish they had a team option on him.

I still think that there's something in his pitching this year that's a mirage, so I don't really want to be the team that gives him a 4/60 or 5/100 or whatever offer after the season. But at least he's done well enough that we can give him a QO, and if he accepts it, I can live with that, or if he doesn't, that's fine too.

If he's eligible for a QO, it's definitely the right call. You get a decent pick if he turns it down. Ray will be 30 and coming off a career year so he'll likely be looking for maximum term.

Yup, probable top 10 pick until he blew out his elbow. Usually gotta wait a couple of years for these guys to make it to the big leagues anyway, so I don't downgrade a guy too much for getting it out of the way now.

I would have preferred Ty Madden ( based on 2 weeks of reading other people's opinion) but Hoglund was my 2nd choice. TJ doesn't bother me, shouldn't bother MLB teams. Jays get a top 10 talent at 19 and can probably go slot or under to sign him. Good job.

Jim Callis from MLB.com:

19. Blue Jays: Gunnar Hoglund, RHP, Mississippi
Nice upside play for the Blue Jays here. Hoglund would've been a top-10 pick if he hadn't blown out his elbow in May and required Tommy John surgery. He has a quality fastball and slider and some of the best command in the college ranks. His situation reminds me a little of what Walker Buehler went through. Buehler had his elbow reconstructed shortly after the Dodgers made him a first-round pick in 2015, and then saw his stuff dramatically improve after he went through the rehab process. If that happens with Hoglund, this could be one of the best picks of the Draft. -- Callis

My favourite thing about this pick is that he has plus command. Sounds like the stuff justifies him going this high as well, so it's a good pick. Couldn't really care less about the TJ.

Top-10 talent that dropped due to an injury with extremely high recovery rates? Beautiful. Great pick IMO.
