OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Wait, so Dante Jr. didn't make it?

No, he only made it up to like AA or so. Looking at bbref, Dante Jr also crushed rookie ball (.340ish avg, .950ish OPS over 2 part seasons), but then never did much once he hit minor league ball. I think that's part of the reason why some people discounted Bo coming up - Dante Jr was a little older, and was already starting to flame out in the minors, so some people figured that Bo might simply end up in the same path. I know Bo's scouting reports coming up were often of a "he's hitting great in the minors, but will it translate?"

This may explain why I didn't know a Dante Jr. existed till today.

Poor Dante Senior.

Gave the wrong son his name.

Dante Sr. had an unorthodox swing, but that wasn't so uncommon in those days. Watch a guy like Albert Belle set up in old video, you do not see anyone do anything like that anymore. I believe Dante Jr. also had his own approach but they tried to bang it out of him in pro ball, like they do with almost everyone. The Jays development team was very smart to leave Bo alone. His weird leg kick until he has 2 strikes and then very short stride after 2-strikes is something that you haven't really seen since the late 80s. He's unconventional and it works for him. Maybe Dante Jr. was just born a few years too soon or drafted by the wrong organization.

It might be a little tight for that homestand at the end of the month, but almost surely will be fine for the Aug 20 homestand. I guess Ontario Phase 3 would still have a capacity limit of 15k, although by that Aug 6 series against the Sox Ontario might be onto the next phase and have larger limits there.

Made me sad honestly that there is that kid saying his favorite player is his little brother, and he doesn't get anywhere and little bro does.

Sad? Dude was a 51st overall pick and got a 750K signing bonus from the Yankees, got to play pro minor league ball for almost a decade instead of having a real job, his old man made about 40 million in career earnings and works in baseball (for the Jays, currently).

The guy is going to waltz into front office positions in baseball if he wants to and his family is set forever. If my little brother was a stud just starting a career as a perennial all star that he's likely to end up with a few hundred million in career earnings from, he'd be my favourite player too.

Sad that he wasn't able to do that all himself. $750k and riding around in minor league buses making minimum wage for a decade doesn't sound fun.

It's this insanely cute family story and I'm sure that Dante Jr. is extremely proud of his little brother. I'm a bit sad that it makes you sad.

Coming from a rich family, getting paid 750K at 19 yr sold and playing a childrens game for money without having to worry about finances isn't a bad way to spend your early to mid 20's man.

Especially considering the fact that he'll walk into a scouting or front office job as soon as he's done with minor league ball.

I don't think you're appreciating just how rare even having his level of career is. He's had about 1 million dollars in career earnings from baseball, and he's not even 29 yet.

You don't feel bad for the older brother who wasn't able to make it? Dad and little bro were both stars, while he never got a sniff of MLB action. And he was obviously a great kid, saying what he did about Bo, instead of just saying something obvious like Pujols or something.

I mean, he's not homeless on the street and battling to survive, but I think falling short of expectations can damage a soul.

Yeah, not great, but he's probably in the 99th percentile of MLB drafted talent even if he never made it to AAA. The sad cases are the guys who barely make anything out of the draft and then struggle in the minors making under min wage for a decade, before giving up and having very few other talents since they basically skipped uni.

It’s incredible the poverty wages that lower-tier baseball players get paid.

If they weren’t highly touted prospects that got paid a big signing bonus at some point, and they never got a sniff of the majors, they probably could have made more money if they’d spent their entire baseball career flipping burgers at McDonald’s.

Not really?

So many people are incredible at baseball but aren’t first round picks with huge signing bonuses. I didn’t get drafted but if my brother did, I’d be pretty ecstatic for him.

Now I’m trying to imagine how I’d feel if I was 1000X more privileged, dad was already a rich ex-player, I was a mere first rounder but my brother was an all star. Hmmm…. I think I’d be OK. Certainly wouldn’t want anyone to feel sad about me.
