OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I don't think this closes yhe door on Ray if it was open.

That said I think the following routes are more preferred than paying him

Big money short term ( Verlander, Thor, Kershaw, Max)

Trade ( Castillo, Manaea, S Gray, Montas, Bassit, Lopez, )

Mid tier FA ( Gray, Matz, A Wood, Desclafani, Cobb, Kikuchi, )

Reclamation project ( Bundy, Kuhl, )

Still need 2 of these

It’s a good deal. I have to fully revise my view (admittedly, at the time, a “hot take”) that the trade was a bust. Everything I read about Berrios suggested that he was going to get to free agency and take top dollar. The fact that he signed a reasonable, probably below market extension in the first offseason puts an entire new spin on the trade.

The prospect cost was high, but they have a durable, quality SP under contract for years, mostly at a good age. Very well done.

Yeah. I definitely thought at the time it was steep, especially for a team that was "out of it" at the time. And I thought I had read somewhere that he was a Boras client, or had heard that he was almost certainly going to test the market, so it seemed bad. But to get him locked up to a solid deal for a long time, that's massive. Especially with him also being a bit younger - his deal ends not much later than the age as Ryu's deal started, we should ideally be getting some prime years at play.

Which means that even without Ray, you're going into next year with Berrios, Ryu, and Manoah at the top of your rotation, and you have them all for a couple years too. Give me one more decent arm, and suddenly you've got a fairly solid rotation and are still running someone like Stripling as a #5, which isn't terrible. Not to mention you give a shot to guys like Kay or Pearson in Spring, and there's some real potential all around.

Gotta think Berrios looked at this team, the Latin culture on it, the youth and talent, the city and wanted to be here long term. Took little less maybe knowing that can go to helping add or extending Vladdy and Bo

He got a very fair contract , and security for life for generations

Why risk getting hurt in your final season before hitting UFA

New CBA could alter the landscape as well , take the cash when you can

Syndergaard gets 1-year and 21 million from the Angels. I think that's a solid deal for them. They have more than enough money, a desperate need for SP, and the compensation pick, who cares. Too bad for them that they didn't get any team options. They won't be able to QO Syndergaard next year so he'll likely just chase the money.

The contract for Berrios is the largest in team history. Have to credit these shitheads, they are getting it done. I think AA would have gotten things done sooner and better, but what is good is good.

these shitheads undoubtedly set us back several years and let a historic window of opportunity slip away, but credit where it is due in the here and now.
