OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Well, looks like my decision not to watch was worthwhile. Better luck next go round, shapkins.

I didn’t really watch any of the regular season. I would’ve watched the playoffs though, if the schedule had worked out.

But with game #1 being a weekday daytime start and game #2 taking place when my family was having thanksgiving dinner, I didn’t end up watching either playoff game. Considering how things turned out, that was lucky.

Mrs Wayward dislocated her elbow climbing last weekend so I am doing double duty around the house and with the pooch. Although if I am being honest I was unlikely to watch even if that was not the case. Pretty sure I was working for game one and running thanksgiving errands game two.

Today I am in the kitchen all day. Whole turkey (stuffed), a variety of side dishes all with local veg, homemade cranberry sauce, and pumpkin spice cake with whipped cream cheese frosting for dessert.

I hope your wife heals quickly.

I have watched pretty much of most seasons game but it has been very hit and miss during this short playoff season.

My hubby had a bicycle accident a few days ago and broke his right hand and now also has a bad cold or flu, so between doing his chores and getting mine done the timing of the games was inconvenient. I left yesterday’s game with the Jays leading 4-0, checked the score after eating dinner and t was 8-1. Yeah!!! Lots of time to finish off the chores and watch the end of the game only to see the Jays implode. How to make a bad week worse.

The way this season played out I was not surprised, just disappointed at how they lost the short playoff series.

I’m looking forward to next season and once again hopping on the optimism train.

I wasn’t able to watch the end of the game because it was insanely long, and I made plans for about 4 hours after it started.

Bring on the pitch clocks.

I would have somewhat understood pulling Gausman after he loaded the bases with none out. But when he got the next two guys with a K and a feeble pop-up, it didn’t make sense. Schneider was obviously thinking that Santana had almost homered off him in the last AB, so it made sense to turn him around. I get it, but with a 7-run lead, just let your best pitcher pitch.

Tapia has to be non-tendered.

Tuned in to hear Buck and Pat gush about what a productive player Tapia has been this year. There’s no excuse for having those guys call games anymore.

Tapia was supposed to be a 4th-5th OF/PR exit velocity experiment. Not a 400+ pa lineup fixture with a 90 wrc+ playing in an elimination game taking our last ab of the season.

If that guy having a bad game is a catalyst for torching the season, you fucked up.

They fucked up! Finally owned their Grickuk mistake to some extent, but instead of cutting him loose and eating the entire contract, wanted to play smart by appearing to get something back for him.

Also the 4th OF often gets 400-500 PAs, and always will on a team with George Springer pencilled in as the everyday CF.

Springer had almost 600 PA this season though. Yeah, your 4th OF is going to get some reps, but having a 4th OF who isn't basically replacement level is a decent idea as well. It's not like Tapia is good defensively or anything either. Coming in to Toronto he was a passable to okay LF, but a borderline unplayable CF/RF. He decided to be bad at all 3 this season, which is great, but we knew he was an empty bat (with the exit velo curiosity, granted) who could only play one OF position passably coming in. It's just another place in the lineup where our front office tried to be cute instead of trying to build a winner.

If you're not going to have a 4th OF with a stick, they should at least have a good and verstaile glove. Tapia was bad enough that we felt the need to add Zimmer ffs.

Small consolation though yeah, Grichuk was terrible again this year. At least they got rid of him.

They knew when they signed Springer that they needed a legit defensive CF to back him up and that the 4th OF would get a ton of playing time. Grichuk salary should never have been an amount they couldn't just eat and go grab an upgrade.

Tapia was fine, since he's a lot cheaper than Grichuk and not terrible on the whole. But he's basically replacement level, so you absolutely don't want that starting for you in a playoff series. But he's a lot closer to a #5 OF than to a #4 OF.

Merrifield has an option for next year. Between him and Biggio, I wonder if that's good enough to essentially backup an OF spot. You still want someone who can play solid D in CF and ideally has a better bat than Bradley Jr or Zimmer as another backup.

I think the big question on the field for next year is how much longer do we keep trusting Bo at SS. He's barely good enough there to stick, but if you want to be a legit contender, you want someone better than that there. Vlad moved permanently to 1B pretty early, do you want to shift Bo maybe to 2B fairly soon so that he can grow there and become a fixture, or do you stick it out at SS as long as he's still playable there?
