OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Where do people stand on Cody Bellinger as a target?

IMO he's in a different class than Nimmo, who is better, and the Benintendi/Conforto tier, cause he has the potential to be better and can actually man CF, but to be clear, the man had a worse WRC+ than Tapia last year, and will still likely warrent being quasi paid on a 1-2 year deal.

I find it fascinating
Assuming he wont get a QO ?

Definitely get, if possible. He has MVP upside, and it will only cost money. Also he is is still very good defensively so worst case scenario really he is a very overpaid 4th OF.

I don’t know the explanation for Bellinger being so terrible now, but it’s the most prodigious drop ever for a guy who was a star before 25. The closest comp I think is Adrian Beltre, who struggled for a few years in his mid-late 20s after a monster last season with LAD.

The problem is that he has enough to a track record to still get paid a bit and if I'm Bellinger im not taking an OF4 gig. I need to be a starter wherever it is i go.

While im intrigued by him, i dont think i can abide the variance of how bad or good he might be as a supposed WS contender.

Just pay Nimmo, or deal Montero++ for Reynolds and pay Rodon/Verlander

Disagreed. Too risky. They don’t like players who have too wide a range of possible outcomes. They live to manage both upside and downside risk.

Their move is more likely to be paying twice as much for Conforto and bringing back Tapia.
Kirby Yates and Jaime Garcia say otherwise

Nah, they love misfit toys.

Both relatively low upside plays and paid accordingly.

I mean, if signing a couple of 30+ year old pitchers to one year deals are your go-to examples of “risk taking”, then you’re kind of making my point.

The difference with this toy is at one time he was a given 4 win player, who has a 7.7 win season and MVP under his belt, and i have heard he fucked around with his swing recently for god knows what reason. At a minimum i would have my entire front office look into this and see if anything can be salvaged

The thing is, because they signed Yates, with that "bonus" money that they counted against their budget it prevented them from upgrading for real.

Anyway, lots of teams will be interested in taking a shot at “fixing” Cody Bellinger. I’d like to see the Jays get a chance, but they’ll probably have to outbid quite a few other clubs.

It's less that and more that IMO they cant risk him being terrible (which he was) in trying to replace Teo.

Nimmo is a flat out upgrade, but if you cant get him, guys like Benintendi, Conforto and Brantley offer a close enough value and more certainty in what they are

They need to sign more than one OF anyway though. Can’t count on Springer and Gurriel as everyday OF. They could sign Brantley and Bellinger. Or trade for Carlson, and sign Bellinger as an OF who plays 1B when Vladdy is the DH.

For what that would cost, i'd rather just pay Nimmo and get a Jake Marisnick sort as the OF4 who is all glove or something on league minimum.

I do not understand the Carlson love. He cant really hit

“Can’t really hit” is a bit off. Carlson was a league average hitter with plus CF defense last year at age 23. Had a 113 wrc+ in a full season at 22. Excellent minor league numbers. Fangraphs projects him at 115 wrc+ next year. Probably not getting a guy like that for Danny Jansen, unfortunately.
