OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Food for thought.

If the Red Sox dont want to pay Devers, but still want to remain competitive, and assuming the Jays would pay Devers.

Who would say no to Chapman++ for Devers (signed)

I mean, we didn't give up one Moreno or Tiedemann for Donaldson himself, never mind two of them.

The general rule is that prospect capital is overvalued in these trades. Just looking at a few recently

- Lindor & Carrasco got Giminenz in return and he's great, but he peaked at the 92nd best prospect on Fangraphs list. The other 2 kids they received were well outside of the Mets top 10 at the time of the trade.

- The Aronado trade was grim AF for Colorado....not even worth breaking out the names.

- The Betts trade, lol

- Even a deal where real high end prospect capital went the one way, it was Trea Turner & Max fucking Scherzer for two top 20 prospects (#15 & 17 according to Fangraphs) and then 2 more outside the Dodger's top 10.

Moreno was a #1 and Tiedemann is probably going to go screaming into the top 10-15 by the end of this year.

If you want a list of elite players that have been traded over the last few years, it's easy enough to find. But they're often risky, with only a single year of control left.
It's not fair including Colorado Rockie things with how the rest of the league operates, but you make very good points you handsome man

Would probably rather pay Chapman tbh. Devers probably isn't a 3B long term. Last 2 seasons, Devers hasn't been worth much more than Chapman at all. A better stick no doubt, but 1B isn't open for us to move him to if the glove at third gets any worse.

I refuse to believe Varsho isn’t a ++CF. If he’s just a LF then they gave away Moreno for a marginal offensive upgrade on Gurriel.

Oh, and handedness. And years of control.

Wasn't Varsho that last year though?

Varsho played mostly RF last year. A reasonably amount of CF, but he wasn't every day there.

The plan here appears to be playing him in LF.

It's weird, his throw tool was rated as a 45, but the defensive metrics have him as providing a fair bit of positive impact with his arm last year and he played RF mostly. My guess is that he gets such a good jump on most balls (he's legit god tier here) that he's able to use that to mitigate having averageish arm strength.

I don't care if they have a noodle for an arm if they can catch all the balls to them.

It's a risky deal, for sure. But Moreno is still raw. Maybe he's Mauer. Maybe he's Joey Bart. Varsho might be the next Joey Gallo. Or he might hit .260/40 hrs with ++ defense.

In terms of what we could have dealt Moreno for, he does check off basically all the boxes for what we wanted. I think he'll almost certainly put up more WAR for us than both guys he was traded for. And will certainly put up more war for us that Moreno would as a 3rd catcher on the roster.

I have to think the first Springer injury that happens and Varsho moves into RF and when George comes back Varsho stays there.

I think you need to be a little delicate in how you handle demoting Springer to start the year at least.

Springer will get some games in CF while Kiermaier sits, plus DH time, plus DL time. That isn’t going to leave that many games for him in RF. Maybe 50-60 tops. So it’s possible Varsho plays more RF than Springer anyway.

The bottom line the Jays are very flexible and very good defensively in the OF, regardless of where Springer, Varsho and KK play and are decently equip to handle injuries with Whit being very serviceable out there and likely another OF addition to the bench ( guessing Grossman)

Yep, they are better defensively and have more lefty bats.

The question is whether achieving those goals are worth moving the top prospect in baseball. I don't know that they are significantly better than if they just kept Teo, Gueriel and Moreno.

And if Swanson was a one year wonder... woof.
