OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Cali is like 5th highest state.

It’s #1 isn’t it?

I think it’s like 37% and 14% taxes for Ohtani’s ilk in Cali, and 53% for Ohtani in Ontario or something.

Plus he’s taxed at US rates anytime he’s playing in the US anyway, isn’t he?

Whatever the exact numbers are, like Mindz said it’s not anything he’s making his decision off…..relative to the city he’d prefer to live in, imo.

(I kinda feel like winning is still overrated by most fans. Don’t think that ranks very high on most guys lists really.)

yeah the whole tax issue is really overplayed by the media IMO.

you're taxed based on where you play, each game, so it's not an all or nothing equation regardless.

plus, these guys can all afford to have the best tax planners so they avoid paying tons of taxes anyways.

For Soler ive heard in around 3/45 or 4/60 and Hoskins maybe a 2 year deal or a 1 + 1 in the 20 AAV range.

I’m old fashioned and too influenced by our Dynasty Leagues scoring system now….but I love all the above other than 4/60 for whoever lands them. Four years of Soler might be a bit much.

Suspect whoever lands them will be happy with the results tho…..and Soler just hits some of the sexiest HR’s in baseball.

He and Hoskins are my favorite DH options in a fallback scenario where we miss on Ohtani.

Neither one should play the field though, and i lean Soler cause Rhys is coming off injury and could very well be a one and done.

I’d stay away from Soler. Good last year, but the three years before that he was a below league average bat. High K, pretty low OBP, he’ll be 32 on opening day and he can’t play the field. He’ll be looking for term too since he just had his best year since 2019 (and really only the second good year of his career).

Hoskins is a better hitter, and might be looking for a pillow contract, so that’s a better fit to me.

Yeah I think your numbers are right. Take it from me, CA is not a fun place to be taxed. In addition to the income taxes, there’s also high sales taxes, property taxes, and certain business taxes (apart from the usual corporate taxes). For instance, in addition to all the other stuff, there’s some business license tax that the city of LA charges, just to “do business”, which is a straight percentage of your revenue (not your profits, your revenue, which I need to pay before year end). It’s really fucking crazy here.

Meanwhile in places like Florida and Texas, you have to state tax, property values are much lower, yet high paying jobs still pay high numbers the same as you’d get for the equivalent in LA. That’s why the last two years were the first two years (ever, I think), where CA had a net loss on the number of people leaving the state versus moving in. Apart from the money, the crime is really out of control in LA and SF especially, the cities and infrastructure have been sort of left to rot, big stores closing up shop because of nonstop shoplifting that doesn’t even really get prosecuted. If you dial 911, you usually have to hold for 5-10 minutes to reach someone, and of course burglars and killers are willing to let you hold…

There’s a lot of reasons to leave LA for Toronto. Honestly, it’s really only the weather, and I guess the allure of Hollywood, that are the only big draws at this point. Everything has definitely taken a few steps back in recent years.

Very true too.

thats a strong ass house edge with the Dodgers at -150. Fanduel showing +130, which is closer to 43%, but factoring the house edge we're talking high 30s.. We'll say 38%. Dodgers at... we'll say 56%.

Inching closer towards a coin flip though, for sure.

Do the odds actually mean anything in the sense that the oddmakers know anything more than what's in the news?

If you just followed betting odds, you’d be more informed about what’s going to happen than you are following the sports themselves imo,

They get it wrong all the time, but they also have it first in meaningful ways before it’s ever reported.

It’s not a magic 8 ball, but it’s a quality indicator.
