I mean, isn't the rule of thumb expressed by just about every tax pro for all lottery winners to take the lump sum now?

Ridiculous to get the first big payment 10 years from now.
 
Scherzer did a lesser version of this to technically get the first $200M contract. Which ended up being an enormous bargain for the Nationals.

Ohtani's making 50M a year from endorsements, which is part of the reason deferring doesn't hurt him. And there's still an open question on whether those big payments later can be made in a way when he's not living in California to maybe save on taxes.

The discount rate MLB uses means it's only counting for 46M right now. But yeah, assuming Justinflation continues, maybe it will be worth even less!

Yep. $ now is always better than money later. That's why NHL players love the signing bonuses and why they are more important than "Taxes".
 
Getting involved and staying til the end on Ohtani is one thing, but unless you know you arent going to be outbid on Yamamoto its probably best to navigate elsewhere and let NYM, BOS, LAD, NYY and SF go for him and not miss out on other things.

And the deferment enables the Dodgers to avoid paying the luxury tax on the full amount of his contract. The other thing is that Ohtani has sources of income other than his baseball salary which are also incredibly lucrative.

LA is also 3 time zones closer to Japan than Toronto, which isn't something about which the Jays can do nothing. Ohtani wasn't just never coming to Toronto, he was never leaving the West coast. The A's and Mariners had a better chance of signing him than the Jays just because of where they are geographically.

Do we know yet where the A’s are going to play from 2025-27, after their Oakland lease expires and before the Vegas stadium is built? Haven’t really been following it.

I'm sure MLB will allow them to play in a 5000 seat college stadium for those few years.
