OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I wonder if they plan on DHing Springer a bit more this year. Get another OFer with power. Bring back Chapman.

This probably takes them out of Bellinger?

This roster wasn’t good enough last year. Not sure why I would have a shred of optimism going into next year with the same roster.

I completely spaced on Belt.

I know lots of smaller market teams must feel this way about their teams, but now I'm totally feeling like, what's the point here?

We're obviously "going for it" as this is not a rebuild or even a retool, just a run back hoping to win it all. But with very little chance of that, all we're doing is burning what's left of Bo and Vlad. If we signed both to monster deals, I could live with some treading and hoping the usual "anything can happen in a short playoff series" (even though that "anything" is always us losing).

But the way things are, unless they add a couple of big names to build some additional hope and excitement, it's tough to give a crap, especially in the face of the Dodgers and their buy now, pay later offseason.
the shapkins dilemma

I don't hate the move, but not sure I like the move. It's a good value deal, but less than ideal fit, and yeah, basically if you just bring back what you had last year, the only way the team gets better is basically hoping for bouncebacks on Vlad, Springer, Kirk, Manoah, etc...

It really only seems like a bad fit if you think they still need to try to “win” the Varsho deal by making him their full time CF. Kiermaier is a better fielder and a decent bet to be better with the bat as well.

But now that they have KK again, the best move would probably be trading Varsho. The “fit” issue would be resolved and you could replace the redundancy with a good corner OF bat. But given KK’s health issues and age, keeping Varsho as a backup option in CF is probably justifiable.

You dont even want to count on KK as a fulltime starter, and he fits great as a 4th OF anyways.

Good player good price.

If they brought him in as a 4th OF, I'll take back what I said. But if memory serves this same conversation was had after they signed him the first time and "he's just the 4th OF" was brought up then as well.

But I'd be very surprised if he wasn't promised the starting job again and the 4th OF turns out to be a glove/pinch runner type.

The odds of them trading Varsho are slim to none, and what makes it potentially a bad fit has nothing to do with the optics of the Moreno deal, it's that if Varsho is just a mediocre to bad stick with a great glove, the best place to get maximum lineup value out of him is in CF. I see people defending the move under the premise that something is different this time, that Shatkins understands last year was a mistake and they'll do something (trade Varsho, or 4th OF KK) different this year to rectify that mistake.

I don't think they feel like they made a mistake and are thinking "we got 4+ WAR for cheap, run that back"

Yeah, if they bring in Teo, for example, and also sign another relatively full time DH, then this is a good signing. You can limit playing time, rotate guys around, and have some flexibility.

But while it gives you good value for money, as you say, Varsho is "wasted" in LF. Still time to round things out, and I don't see this as a bad move, as long as more is coming.
