OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Franco only makes $2M a year for now, so the Rays will likely let it play out (or try to negotiate a buyout while Franco is in major legal jeopardy.) If he’s convicted of a criminal offence, the Rays would have a good case to terminate his contract. But if he takes a plea for something minor (pun intended), or if he’s found not guilty, it’s not so clear.

Either way, it’s doubtful that Franco ever plays in MLB again.

MLB tends to be willing to convict people even if the government can't. If they do basically suspend him for life, the Rays should be able to effectively vacate the deal and not pay him.

But yeah, just as he was breaking out, seems like he'll be done.

Couple of points - Crazy Tinfoil Hat time or just Reading Tea Leaves? :

  • They are waiting on Belly to decide term. Probably don't want to go 8 years, Probably want to give him the Springer contract (term and length).
  • If they get Belly, they trade Springer - probably only want to give out one of those contracts and Belly is younger entering his prime while Springer is older and exiting his prime.
  • Shatkins has decided that the market inefficiency is Defence, or WAR is WAR is WAR. So if IKF is all world at 3rd then that is cheaper than Chapman who might hit a bit better. What is elite defence worth at 3rd?
  • So buckle up for IKF/Biggio pairing at 3rd.
  • Espinal is probably traded. Rumors are that other Teams see him as a depressed SS asset.
  • TEO for LF and DH.
  • I get a feeling that they are going to trade BO this off-season. They don't like how his defence is average to below average and he probably won't age well defensively. Will he move off SS with the Jays?
  • BO's bat is still great though, but it is all in his hand-eye, will that also degrade as he gets older?
  • Bo + Manoah for what?

If those quotes don't make you want to rush out and buy a season ticket, man, I feel bad for you. Stoked for the lack of moves the front office has planned.

I'm not sure they've ever pretended a $7.5m salary free agent was good enough to be a starter before.

They’re paying him more than they paid Whit, who got about 600PA last year.

Expect similar for IKF. They can also mix Biggio and Schneider in at 3B.

They never pretended Whit was the defacto starter heading into last year. Whit won the majority of 2B at bats with a torrid 1st half, while Espinal (and Biggio) shat the bed.

Are there no prospects coming up that we could use? Thought this was the Shatkins model?
The farm is very weak. It might be the model, but the execution is lacking.

Seriously, if Rogers had not opened up the coffers in a way they never have for any other GM, this would be a 65-70 win team.

These guys should have been fired after this past season.

Clearly, there is no sense of urgency from this front office to go for it in 2024. They have learned nothing.
