OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

They’re only about $7 million away from the tax, so a bit unclear how “nimble” Atkins will have to be to make any significant upgrades.

Agree that it sort of looks like they’re hedging their bets. Run it back with last year’s 89-win team and hope they exceed expectations. If not, it might be time for a new GM who will be asked to trade Vladdy and Bo before they walk for nothing. Pretty unenviable position, but then trading Halladay was one of AA’s first moves.

yup, after making the playoffs 3 out of 4 years and missing the other year by 1 game, they are totally half trying to win this time

Their offence was a sincere problem.

They had an opening in LF and brought in....the same all glove 9 hitter they had last year, who devalues the all glove CF they gave up a top prospect for by forcing him into LF again. Now, i like KK, and could sorta get behind this if they got very good bats to replace other guys, even if im certain KK probably doesnt hit as well again, but.

They signed IKF who in a disaster scenario is a massive offensive downgrade on Chapman, and in a presumed scenario a downgrade on Whit Merrifield offensively, which is a helluva thing to say

Belt was damn good last year, hard to do better than what he did, but with JDM, Soler and Hoskins out there, its possible. Instead if they sign Joc, its hard to see how that makes you better.

None of these deals are longer than 2 years in length, so yeah it kinda looks like a half assed approach to trying to win, but making sure there is no money on the books when they enter a fuck or walk situation with Bo and Vlad in the last years of their deals next year ( i suspect at least one if not both are moved)

I'm sure you are aware of this, but free agents don't always sign in order of best to worst. Plenty of off-season left to go.

I'm not super high on Joc (though he does seem like a cool dude), but wRC+ the last 3 years shows a wide range of outcomes (96, 146, 111). The guy can definitely hit righthanded pitching.

If they sign Joc, that would be three bats they would have brought in, none of them overly impressive, and at least one flat out terrible, and im not sure if you're aware of this, but not a ton of places left to add guys, and the likely position (3B) where there is almost nothing great

I could also see them signing Gio Urshela to round out the infield. He kind of checks all their boxes: low risk, versatile, came up in the Cleveland organization, bit of power, moderate upside if you squint, and won’t require a long commitment.

Barf.

I’m ok with all this non committal short term stuff if it means we get new management next year. I have my doubts though.

I think Atkins is only out for sure if they bomb. If they sneak in to the last wild card with another sub-90 win season again, he’ll probably get more rope.

Shapiro isn’t going anywhere. The best bet is that their next GM is experienced and unwilling to play second fiddle to Shapiro. But my guess is it will be someone like Matt Forman. He was thought to be in the running to take over GM duties in Cleveland when the Mets interviewed Chernoff a few years back.

I wouldn't really put much stock in any "Jays interested in X" rumors until they get closer to agreeing to a deal. Just because if there's one thing we know about the front office, is they are rumored to be interested in everyone. For all we know it's "Hey Joc, wanna play here for 2m? No, okay, thanks".

Still think the best fit out there is someone like Teoscar, who is still good enough to run out in the outfield on a semi-regular basis, but who can be primary DH the rest of the time. If you get Joc, you still need a DH vsl, not to mention still need someone else vsl in LF assuming you don't want to run both KK and Varsho out there. At some point the roster spots fill fast.

I agree but BNS was pretty on the money with KK and IKF before they happened. I believe the front office leaks this stuff to him before he writes a glowing article

Is he still getting paid or contract terminated
he's probably still getting paid now (innocent until proven guilty), but they will absolutely be able to get out of the contract down the road. Dude has likely cost himself $182 million dollars and a potential Hall of Fame career.

As a MLB jersey collector ive been trying to get one of every team. Rays are in the final three of what i dont have, and Wander or Boggs were the leading candidates depending on which style i found. Getting a blank in the mail this week, thank the lord i didnt make this decision a year earlier.
