OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Combined projections:

WRC+

RF Springer 113
SS Bichette 123
1B Guerrero 139
C Kirk 116
2B Schneider 113
DH Turner 112
CF Varsho 106
LF Biggio 99
3B Espinal 96
Two (maybe 3?) backup IF in the starting 9.

What could go wrong?

The good part about Turner is that he doesn't need to be platooned, like Belt did. He's probably arguably a better fielder than either Soler or JD Martinez, so you can probably afford to give him 20-30 games at 1B and maybe 20-30 at 3B without destroying yourself.

But yeah, it's not exactly something to be really excited about. He should be a decent replacement for Belt, but yeah, that's about it.

The team desperately needs Varsho to pick up his bat, since we're back to being a heavily RH lineup (especially if Schneider wins the 2B job), and the only open roster spot at this point needs to be another righty too to cover for Varsho/KK in the OF, since you really don't want both of them in the lineup against lefties.

Is there anyone out there who would give us something for Espinal? He's pretty redundant at this point, and the team would look a lot better if we could find a better platoon option at 3B. Like, can the Rockies be dunces and trade us McMahon for Espinal and a prospect, maybe? I really want someone who will turn Mr Falafel into a bench bat.

the first major mistake was Kiermaier, who i like.

You could have signed a pretty good bat, who plays good LF defense in Adam Duval for im guessing the same price, and put Varsho in CF.

IKF is a god damn joke.

Turner played 5 games at 3B last year and was awful at it, and Boston had the worst defensive 3B in baseball.

Get out of here with this nonsense. If Adam Duvall is the answer, it doesn't matter what the question is because you're already wrong. You don't even know his fucking name for Christ's sake.

BAT X: 87
STEAMER: 87
ZIPS: 104

I know that this might be a bit shocking to some people here, but I don't really like this signing. Turner is 39, and I know that he had a good year last year, but once decline happens, it happens fast!

Though the silver lining is: DH is the easiest position to find in the Trade Market. So if he sucks, he will only suck for like half the year.
🤷‍♂️
Meh.

Still need a lefty masher, plus Chapman and Belly are still out there.

In my fever dream, they sign Belly, trade Springer and then sign Grichuk to be their 4th outfielder.

Do something Shatkins or this might be just a bad off-season! Still a playoff team according to projections...
🤷‍♂️
Meh.

Turner gets 1/13 with incentives up to 14.5
IKF got 2/15. So around $21 million this year for two guys who should probably be part time players.

This is what happens when an organization can’t develop internally. They are either forced to sign multi-year deals, which turn to pumpkins in the later years (Ryu, Springer) or they go for short-term deals on guys who are flawed or well past their prime.

KK and Belt worked out remarkably well last year, maybe it will happen again?

I don't think signing vets to one year deals has much to do with internal development tbh.

These are the guys you can easily push to the bench or move on from entirely if kids earn their way in. They're the kind of signings you make when you have kids you expect to be breaking through soon.

The point isn’t that short term vet deals shouldn’t be used to block kids. It’s that there are no kids, and every year they’re plugging multiple major holes in the roster through FA.

Bassit, Gausman, Kikuchi—All FA. Turner, IKF, KK, Springer all FA.

That’s 3/5 of the rotation, 2/3 of the OF, 3B and DH all filled at top dollar in the FA market.

Compare that to other AL East teams. Baltimore has 0 FA in their starting lineup or rotation. Tampa’s has 1 (Zach Elfin). Boston has 3 (Storey, Yoshida, Giolito), NYY has 4 (Lemahieu, Cole, Rodon, Stroman.)

Toronto has 7. It’s an organizational failure.

particularly ironic given shapiro's criticisms of AA too

Tiedemann and Orelvis are the only prospects in the system above 45 future value (low-end regular/platoon.)

The system is barren.

And unless Orelvis really rakes at AAA this season, he aint ready to make a major impact.

Schneider is interesting, but the moron coach didnt make a huge attempt to play him much after his heater ( i think they hate his glove) and we have a glut of MINF on the team that can maybe get in his way.

If Espinal is on the roster opening day i might cry.
