OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I made a mistake and bought my ticket for the Jays game in Baltimore for trade deadline day instead of the day before.

They could gut the team. Preparing to explain to my kid why the Jays lost the game 15-0.

Don't think they're gonna gut the team, they already signaled they want to try and compete next year. Decimated by injuries and poor performance this season but still have Vladdy and Bo for 1 more year. They may have considered moving Bo for the right offer but he's on the DL now till past the deadline so much less likely.

Will definitely move expirings like Kikuchi and Yimi though.

On what video game are they going to compete next year ?

Keegan Matheson put it best , " the dreaded middle is not where you want to be in MLB "

This is a tear down reagrdless of what Rogers thinks

Its baseball. It doesn't matter where you are in the standings. There's no reason you can't rebuild the system regardless of the standings. You just need a competent front office

Lots of teams compete while building strong farm systems. It's a pretty unique league that way. Most star players aren't high 1st round picks.

Of the current top 10 position players by WAR, 3 are top 10 picks. Of the top 20, only 4 are top 10 draft picks.

the craziest thing about this disaster is that the most sensible path actually seems to be....run it back. crazy, but it's not like a firesale will get us anything.

the only worthwhile "big change" move they should make at the moment is to fire shapiro.

The obvious thing to do is just to fire Shatkins into the sun and then let the next guys sort through the mess and plot a course. Retool, rebuild, whatever they choose to do.

The absolute worst thing you can do now is let these guys make any moves at all.

Good post but you need a solid Orioles type farm system to do it

Jays have 2/3 of a lineup that wont be here in 1-2 years but no farm system for immediate help

You cant turn this shit around overnight , and you cant be in the dreaded middle

You can only spend so much in free agency but great teams always have a young pipeline like the Dodgers and Yanks to offset the core money players

You cant hide in MLB in a 162 game season , your flaws get exposed my mid season .

We’ve already seen this movie. If they let Atkins and/or Shapiro stay, the next few years will just be 2017-2019 on repeat. Except instead of having Vladdy and Bo in the system to build the next team around, there is nothing.
