OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Legit question, no trolling: do setup men get top 5 system prospects?
Uh… maybe? But my point isn’t about where the prospects rank in the organization. It’s about valuing upside over MLB-readiness.

An example would be David Robertson trade last year. The Mets got two lower-ranked, but higher ceiling prospects from Marlins organization.

I don’t have any real problem with the specific players here, I just continue to dislike the approach.

Don’t know much about Clase. Looks like his main selling point is supposed to be “MLB-ready”.

Class was 10th on the MLB list of Mariners top prospects. Fangraphs had him at 7th and 45 future value (i.e. low-end regular/solid platoon).

At a high level, this looks like another trade focused more on how soon the player will be in the majors over upside. There would be enough of a market for Garcia that they could have gone in the other direction.

i like his stats better than those rankings/ratings.

His numbers in AAA this year are decent, but remember those are PCL stats. Small sample in MLB this year, he was badly overwhelmed. He looked good in A-ball too, but it’s A-ball and also 20 isn’t actually that young for the California league.

Anyway, maybe it works out. Just looks to me like they went for a low upside guy close to the majors instead of taking a shot on a prospect with a higher ceiling, which is of course their MO.

He's young for AAA but still well above average with the right kind of underlying numbers for me. Could comfortably still be in AA this year. Mlb sample doesn't mean much imo.

Yep, not suggesting it means much except that he might not actually be MLB ready. A 111 wrc+ in the PCL also doesn’t mean much.

Anyway, Clase’s speed alone should make him entertaining. Just well past time they brought in new management to make decisions about the future of this team.

the wrc+ is adjusted to league average btw.

AAA this year

* IF Orelvis (22): 269pa, 8.9b%, 24.2k%, .288bip, .260avg, .264iso, 118wrc+
* OF Clase (22): 280pa, 14.3b%, 25.7k%, .344bip, .274avg, .209iso, 111wrc+

and it sounds like Clase has much more defensive upside.

and this was a good year for Orelvis.

The Rays have made a couple of nice re-stocking trades, even through they’re 6 games up on the Jays. They got 5 interesting prospects for Arozarena and Elfin. And they’ll be better than Toronto next year, too.

Toronto spends $140M more per year on payroll than Tampa. Why can’t we just poach their entire organization from the front office, development staff, pro and amateur scouting departments, right down to the bat boy?

Tiedemann out with TJ, do you have to blow it up completely now? If you got him back next year it would be some hope that him, Manoah back, and a return to stardom from Vlad and Bo you could compete

Most pitchers need TJ at one point or another these days. They were really babying him, too. Making massive organizational decisions based on one prospect pitcher would be... Unwise.
