OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Or... maybe... on his way to the airport, the Dodgers called and offered him like $100 million more on the spot to stay in LA.

Honestly, the number ending up at 700 supports this. The Dodgers were initially bidding against themselves, they weren't going to throw 100-200 millie up without some real (or at least imagined) pressure. Fwiw, I think Ohtani probably did seriously consider Toronto's bid and may have been willing to accept it, but the Dodgers were always the preferred destination, and it was just a matter of getting as much money out of what seemed like a done deal months ago.

Yeah, the general consensus BEFORE he blew out his elbow was a starting bid of 10/500. Some folks wondered if the price might come down a bit because of TJ, and while that was probably unrealistic, seems likely the Jays blew past that number, forcing the Dodgers to jack up their bid to get it done.

Credit to the bean counters at Rogers for figuring out that Ohtani was worth 20M/yr in marketing efforts alone

I agree with Mindz btw, we were his safety school that he was totally fine with going to if LAD didnt exceed our offer, and the Jays FO was genuine in their pursuit.

What i dont buy though is anything close to those funds will be allocated elsewhere. Rogers wanting Ohtani had little to nothing to do with baseball IMO

Im already bracing myself for something terrible

Im going to assume there is no Yamamoto, and no Tiedemann all in trade ( mainly cause of availability, not front office cowardice)

I think Bellinger is possible ( and i hate it) but someone needing a CF is way more likely to dish out what could end up being the worst contract in MLB

I think Chapman is quite possible. They know what he is, and the defense is really valuable to them and the pitchers. And really, there isnt much else, that said, they will have a walk away number ( and they should) and i can see CHC or SF going silly.

They absolutely need to get a DH style DH. One of Soler, JD Martinez, Hoskins, so help me christ if they choose a way worse bat like Turner or Brantley cause they can play the field once a week, i will lose my fucking mind.

I assume they will be creative in the trade market for at least one of 3B/LF cause the FA market is fucking thin. I can see Kikuchi moved for either ( we dont need his awesome recruiting anymore) and then a SP5 brought in for 10-12M per ( as is tradition)

Max Kepler i think is my fave trade target who wont cost a ton.

It is also helpful, that he doesn't have to move to a new home.
He’s gonna have to move to a new home, unless he doesn’t mind the 1.5-2 hours it routinely takes to get to LA from Newport Beach due to SoCal traffic anytime after 1 pm (that’s why Kobe used to helicopter it from his home in Newport to the Staples Center but that didn’t end too well, unfortunately). But I think he can afford a nice pad in the LA area.
