OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto offered how much? Don't worry Shohei, we can top any offer!

Toronto Maple Leafs announce that William Nylander's new 50-year contract will count $1 against the cap for the first 6 years, with Eleventy Billion dollars deferred until he receives his first old age pension.

Holy shit, that is literally a stunning revelation. What a fucking moron.

He gets to live in LA, never has to worry about money, and the contract structure allows the Dodgers to build a great team around him (something the Angels couldn't pull off)

Sounds like a win, win, win

How is he an idiot?

The deferred money will be paid out from 2034-2043. And if he is living outside of California he won’t pay Cali tax on 680 Million dollars. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Another reason why the Jays need to find their superstars from within or trade. You have shown the ability to recruit the 1B tier guys like Gausman and Springer. But those true superstars don’t seem to want to sign here for the most part.

Now the Jays need to show commitment to their own stars and re-sign Bo and Vlad to extensions.

I expect some low level nobodies to fill out the roster. Maybe a Chapman who can’t hit. But his glove does kind of offset his bat. But still need to be able to put runs on the board! Remember we can’t score!!!!

Say one season of that $70M comes out to $30M after commissions and taxes.

$30M invested in a basic CD at any bank would generate $1.5M per year for him (almost his actual current salary). And that's literally the most conservative investment he could make. Compound it with each successive season. Instead, he won't see that money for years.

If you can convince him to be a mostly DH and emergency C i would add Mitch Garver to the Soler/Hoskins/JDM grouping of acceptable DH's i'd like, dude can flat out mash, and Kirk and or Jansen will be hurt at some point.

Yeah, he would have never made 70m next year, that's why they defer. Bascially the choice was take 46m this year, or 2m now and 68m in 10 years. Plus brag about a shiny big round number.
