OT: Vacations

if you’re doing 3 weeks then spend a few nights in Bogota or Medellin (or both). You can fly TO direct to Bogota so it’s not hard l to squeeze in.

and if you go, you need to hit up salento. It’s a must do.

their national airline gets just about everywhere and is cheap, so it’s an easy country to travel.

is going to sicily in august absolutely nuts?

or do i just gotta mentally prepare for the heat?

leaning sicily for my 2nd week of vacay next year.

I think one can manage one’s own risk… e.g. being sun smart from 11 am to about 4 pm. I wouldn’t go on a strenuous hike during peak hours. Strolling through villages with lots of shade, water and gelato is OK. A beach with lidos too.

The thing I wonder about are the uncontrollable events, i.e. wild fires. It’s impossible to predict and still low probability… but it shouldn’t come as a total surprise anymore. (I know someone who was evacuated from Hawaii.)

Anyway, I would go.

Definitely concerned about the second paragraph. Got full cancellation on my hotel til right up until the trip. I'll see how things go leading up and book a cheap ass flight last minute.

The caveat here is that I'm a baby back bitch with insanely hot weather, but Sicily in August seems like literal hell to me.

The other caveat is that when I go to Italy it's in my hometown without any AC and shit so August in Italy for me is never fun. But then again, it's quite a bit more north and "cooler" than Sicily so those factors may balance out to some degree.

I would avoid summering in Sicily, or anywhere in Italy. My partner really wanted to visit Rome this summer and she later appreciated my reluctance when their 40C + inferno made daily headlines

If August was my only option, I’d choose Greece. Endless beaches on the islands and you follow the local’s lead by napping after lunch until 3pm

Peru is pretty awesome and I haven’t even got to Machu Pichu yet. Altitude sickness is a muthafucka though. Got dizzy walking 10 feet from my shuttle to hotel

You should have done altitude training to prep for this like those weirdos at the gym with the masks on.

Planning a trip for next summer at the moment. We’ll be travelling with a ~1 year old. My wife will be finishing her MAT leave in September so pretty much any time before then. We’re thinking 2-3 weeks.

So many places in Europe that I’d love to see. With a 1 year old it’ll have to be somewhat easygoing.

Anyone here travel with kids/toddlers/babies to Europe? Any recommendations? We want to see it all. we like outdoors stuff and I have this vision of having the kid in a baby carrier while I safely trek some beautiful terrains in Switzerland, Austria type thing.

Many friends recommend Portugal as a great place. Kind of tough in some of the towns as there is a lot of hills to walk. Might be tougher with a stroller/baby.

We’ve been eyeing Portugal too, never been. However, apparently Lisbon has become Airbnb shitshow. It seems tech and property firms have been scooping up apartment buildings and doing short term leases for an army of digital nomads. Obviously it’s happening elsewhere (I think Florence is taking measures to control their accommodation issues) but Lisbon is said to be particularly bad. So just a heads up.

I’m not sure if this is the case with Porto or other parts of the country. Anyway, regardless, we’re still keen to get there at some point.

If hiking with a baby in a baby carrier is a thing you do already, then absolutely work that into your vacation plans.

Airbnb everywhere is becoming a shitshow. Finding those "cheap getaway spots" is becoming a lot harder, that unless if you have some specific cases (longer term stay or larger home), it's often cheaper to find hotels.

A place like Lisbon is getting overrun, but it's more going from being super cheap to being moderately cheap, but in a country like Portugal where the average salary is like 900eu a month, it's pricing out the locals.

Portugal is still awesome. Definitely would still recommend it. Have no experience traveling with a kid - at least Lisbon and Porto both have solid transit systems to get around.

Well wait till you get there, hope you like heights with minimal barriers while there’s lots of traffic going up and down slick rock steps :) Amazing place though!

Are you staying in Aguas Calientes or Ollantaytambo?

Thanks for the pep talk. I’m just doing a day trip from Cusco to Machu Pichu. I’ve been in Puno for the last couple of days to try to adjust to the altitude before leaving tomorrow for Cusco. Definitely felt better today but I think it’ll still be a struggle even with the drop in elevation from Puno to Machu Pichu.

Mostly just ribbing, Peru is an amazing country, enjoy the trip!
