OT: Vacations

The adventures of traveling in the current climate feels nightmarish to me. My parents went to Cuba last week and it has been interesting:

1. On the flight there an anti-masker refused to put on a mask on the plane. They had to return to the airport after taking off and police then escorted him off the plane after about an hour of him screaming at the sheep who are complying with the very basic and minimal orders. Hope his heroic act was worth losing out on his vacation!

2. Their return flight is delayed by 2 days (so far).

3. The people they went with now have covid and it ain't mild for them.
yeah international travel just seems... kinda like Russian roulette at this point.

and the anti-masker on the plane is one of my worst nightmare scenarios. did he keep his mask on until they were in the air and then assume he was free to not comply with the rules? glad they enforced the rules though.

the delays seem to be endemic now.

and yeah covid is everywhere lol.

After reading these travel horror stories, I’m feeling pretty fortunate that I was able to fly in and out of BC last month with minimal issues. And on a shitty discount airline too.

My flight out there was delayed by 30 minutes and my flight back by an hour, but that was the extent of the problems I faced. No massive delays, no lost luggage, no freedumb warriors on my flights, no one caught Covid (or anything else).
yeah our Flair trip from Hfx-Toronto basically had just an hour plus delays on either end but was otherwise uneventful. oh, online check-in was broken too which added some stress. still, a win given what is happening generally.

I was on Swoop, since I’ve got family in Abbotsford and it’s pretty much the only airline that flies direct from Toronto to Abby.

Funny enough, their online check-in was broken too. I was worried they’d cancelled or fucked-up my ticket somehow until I got to their airport and all the other people in line were claiming they couldn’t check in either.

Swoop doesn't do online check in. At least that was the case a few months ago Edmonton to Abbotsford

Online check-in was offered as an option in the e-mail they sent me with my tickets! And they had a link to a check-in webpage where you could enter your reservation number.

It’s just that after you did, the page would either keep loading until it timed out or would do nothing at all.

So, maybe it’s a new service they’re trying and failing at, I guess.

No clue. Parents just briefly told the story, I'm sure I'll hear more when they're back. They got lucky enough that their trip there was fairly smooth and not delayed, but they still got fucked over in the end by dealing with that. Oddly enough the freedom warrior experience is probably near best case scenario for international travel these days. There are so many worse things that could have happened.

yeah Flair's online check-in wasn't working. and they knew it wasn't working. but they chose not to communicate that to anyone at all. so I had to spin my wheels checking and rechecking and trying different browsers and chat support etc. I couldn't even speak to a customer service rep cause the 'queue' was full. so you'd call and click through the buttons and the call would end.

then the next morning I called them early and got an agent who was like, 'oh yeah, online check-in isn't working. just go to the airport and they'll waive the check-in fee'. would have been fucking helpful to know this sooner asshats.

Yeah, I briefly explored Swoop’s non-existent customer service options too.

In the end I just decided to cross my fingers, head to the airport early and hope that everything would work out OK.

Come to Europe! Here, nobody seems to care about the pandemic anymore. Basically nowhere has mask rules, only a handful of people wear them anywhere. Travel isn't even that bad, I haven't noticed any real flight delays, and obviously trains still run without issue. Everyone's more or less back to their old ways. Sounds like Germany is hitting another wave, and might bring some mask rules back, but otherwise things are easy overall.

Yah, we figured it might take another year for things to stabilize. We’re travelling with kids, so potential hassles become really off putting. It’s a road trip for this year, then we reevaluate.

Yeah, that's where the wife and I have arrived at for now. Short roadies to Niagara, Ottawa, maybe Montreal are all we're doing for the year. Shelving an Aruba trip we were planning in September, probably shelving Mexico for Christmas.

The airport situation is a small price to pay to travel imo. Very inconvenient but fuck I need outta here from time to time.

Italy in august
Vegas in Oct
Somewhere for New Years.

Life isn’t stopping for me.
