I went zip lining in Roatan. Didn't see much of the area outside of the rainforest, but had a good time.

FWIW my parents just came off a covid infection so they timed their Cuba vacay with that since my dad in particular is uhhh not the healthiest. Curious to see if BA.5 will get them since they got hit with BA.1 or BA.2 in April.

Royal caribbean docs near the ghetto of Roatan... carnival has its own part in a slightly nicer area of the island.

Went to a private beach just offshore and it was nice but the drive to get to it was through some rough parts.

I have a few diver buddies who love Roatan. They're the types who wouldn't have been too rattled by a knife fight back in the day though, so their travel habits might not be for everyone. Mind you, I've enjoyed some places that others have called sketchy too I guess.

I did a couple days in Caye Caulker a few years ago and it was nice. Was kind of nice to get a little of that sort of Jamaican vibe to it.

My issue is my custody agreement with the Ex. I can't just leave the country without her signature.

yeah I did a dive trip to Utila.

diving was a huge letdown though. I've almost just categorically ruled out the Caribbean Sea as basically as my worst dives were there.

didn't make it to Roatan. did visit Cayos Cochinos.

but I can relate to trudging through super sketchy areas to go diving. perhaps it has desensitized me somewhat. my experience in Borneo was quite something in that regard.

I drove all over Belize man, was considering buying a place there years back. It's heartbreaking. No running water, electricity. Living in shacks with outhouses still. Kids begging tourists for a dollar to pet a lizard they caught is a main industry at many sites.

It broke my heart so much I bailed on the idea. I can't live like a king while others are in filth. Can't do it.
