We had one of those escalators at rexdale plaza to the underground parking level...but magnets might not have been invented yet, lol. You were supposed to hang on to your cart for dear life or ride it down the ramp I guess.

Didn't Dubai have to pretty much carry out its sewage (stored in tanks) via trucks for a while? Granted, I suspect that had to do with specific terrain issues more than anything.
