I want to believe he's not stupid enough, but I think he is.

It's a massive tactical misstep though. Nato doing something as relatively simple as enforcing a no fly zone over Ukraine in conjunction with the Ukies receiving a bucket of F16's effectively ends this war even if a nato plane never drops a single bomb.

He can't even subdue the Ukrainians after 2 years of trying. What the fuck does he think he's going to accomplish against NATO?

If Putin instigates a war with the West someone inside the Kremlin is going to defenestrate him.
 
I think it’s more a question about being opportunistic. At one point, they weren’t terribly keen on Russia escalating. Bad for business. But if they have the same core motivation (regime security), who knows?

Their own.

They would very likely take the opportunity to take a shot at Taiwan, and maybe some Philipino and Japanese Islands they think they have a claim to.

They (like Russia) aren't capable of projecting power outside of their backyard, so it's not like they would be doing much of anything in Europe aside from sending weapons.
