OT: World Politics

Hey whatever the fix is I’m on board. Might want to take a look at regulating social media algorithms as well.

Or banning. There's no need for an algo. Bluesky operates just fine without one. It's just the boring old posts of all the boring old people you follow served up to you chronologically. No rage/engagement baiting necessary. I used to close twitter in the mood to smash someone. Despite the world being worse now...by a lot, lol....than it was then, I close bsky in a completely different mind frame.

Part of resisting Trump internationally imo is going to be how Canada/UK/EU deal with social media and AI regulations.

They can do it as long as there is no more than 5 no's. The concern nations based on previous aid votes are Austria, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Malta, and Cyprus. Hungary wouldn't count as they lose their ability to vote on Article 7 due to being the subject of it. So short of all 5 going against and there being a weirdo one thrown in there additional, it would probably pass and Orban would get smacked hard. But I think Orban knows that and will do what we've already discussed. Drag it out as long as possible and make it as expensive as possible to his benefit.

I'll say this though, the more serious Europe gets about it's defence, if he continues to be an obstructionist, I could see this come up in a hurry. Europe really appears to not be fucking around with the Russia threat anymore.
Those five countries track for me, with a little thought (especially Austria - who was that young kid that was running things for awhile?), and I'm pretty happy with Europe's moves and attitudes about defence.

I don't know if they love fascism so much as they have legit issues that 30-40+ years of neoliberal economics have dropped in their lap and they're reacting to it by wanting to tear the system down. Pretty sure if you gave them good jobs and affordable housing the issue would mostly go away.
No, like everything else with young men, it comes down to whether or not they can get women to spread their legs for them. If they can't, they gravitate to parties bent on stripping women of their rights so that they can no longer refuse.

Yep. I was banned on Twitter (but managed to sneak back on via another phone number) because the fascists I called out put me on a list of "libtards" and tried to run me off the platform. I've never had an issue on Bluesky but Count has apparently received warnings there even though nothing he posts on X ever gets scrutinized for censorship.

What does the big guy call himself on twitter and Bluesky?

Absolutely some real issues that need to be tackled there. Bigger problem is the effect of social media mainstreaming extremist views.

Double-edged sword. There is benefit in having smart algorithms delivering relevent content you're likely to be interested in. I find the lack of one a weakness of Bluesky.

Of course it's a real problem that so many people are rage machines. But we need to find a way to retain as much freedom of speech as possible, censorship and banning are not the answer. I mean maybe there is no other solution, but I don't believe that. Social media is so new, they learned how to game it and it's been impossible to keep up. But that's still the only way out.

The algo is obviously a problem, but I think it's just tilling soil made fertile by other problems. Now, it's a fucked up till that should be heavily regulated or fucking outlawed, but if we're talking about root cause I'm on team Galloway on this one. He's been talking about it for a bunch of years now.

Oh jesus, talk about a solution in search of a problem....I mean, we've got one of a few choices to make. 1) No algo 2) Algo in the hands of for profit corporations who make money off of farming engagement 3) Algo in the hands of government (China says hi)

Fuck me if the potential issues arising from #1 (it is very slightly harder to find content you might like in a world completely drowning in content, and it's not piped directly into your face with only a thumb twitch necessary to find moar) simply don't belong in a conversation with the drawbacks to #2 (literally using it to decide who our governments are) or 3# (Ni hao!)

What does an algo have to do with freedom of speech though? We're not talking about banning content, just not allowing an entity to tinker with what speech is put in front of you, in what order, to elicit a response that they know in advance will occur. Why are we allowing powerful entities to fuck with our heads for fun, power and profit?

Yep, he's always on point for this issue.

2) Algo in the hands of for profit corporations who make money off of farming engagement
Figuring out how to make this work for everybody concerned is the only answer here. A social media company should be able to make money, just like any other company. There do have to be rules preventing them from doing whatever the fuck they want, which can be said about any industry.

YouTube without an algorithm is just you sitting there for 10 minutes thinking of something to search for. Nobody wants that, and it's not gonna happen anyway.

The algo is basically in the same category as casino's IMO and should be regulated as such. For profit addiction machines that need to be kept away from children and the weak.

They won't self regulate, and even governments aware of the problem haven't come up in a solution for going on 15 years now.

I don't think that a solution for everybody is the priority here. Triage is the priority.

Could be worse. It was a given that Merz was going to be the new chancellor and other than immigration there's not too much he and AFD get along on. SPD winning enough votes to help them pass legislation gives a good centre-left off ramp on most issues for the CDU to take. It's probably best case scenario for where they were. What we really didn't want imo was for coalition/deal making between the CDU and the centre and left to be complicated and difficult. Nobody wants the AFD to be the kingmaker, so I think left wing germans are just going to have to accept that immigration laws are a lost cause to them for a while.

Yeah, could have been worse. Sticker shock.

But the there’s a bigly problem with young dudes.
