East Germany has never come close to catching up to West Germany post reunification. Part of it is the effect of brain drain, most who were skilled enough to move to West Germany, did. Part of it is just the difficulties in taking a population held back by 40 years of soviet nonsense and trying to get it caught up with one of the world's economic powerhouse regions. With all due respect to OP, I think she's falling for her personal version of "to a hammer, every problem is a nail" given that she's a political scientist, she sees the problem in terms of that. If there is a common theme across this entire international tilt to the right, it's economic. When middle class white people felt like they were doing good, they were tolerant of immigrants, hopeful for the future, etc. Take that feeling away though and we're seeing the same thing happen in different places. It's not a coincidence. The far right has given them a vision for the future. It's a vision full of fucking lies, but it's a vision and we've learned that a whole fuckton of voters in well educated countries either aren't sophisticated enough to see the lies or don't fucking care to try to see the lies. The left is far more fragmented imo and the messaging ranges from "nothing is wrong" to "everything is your fault because you're shit and a racist mysognist".
