OT: WWE/MMA/Boxing Thread

I'm not surprised that AJ McKee won, I thought he was going to win. But I'm really surprised how easy he made it look.

Speaking of UFC:

Could you imagine anyone in the NFL, NHL or MLB having a player burst into tears over getting a $50k bonus because the sport has financially ruined them?

Dear fighters, unionize.

That's fucking sad.

Imagine being one of the ESPN execs watching that? How fucking rough does that look for your brand that fighters are talking about 50K being life changing?

The ESPN execs are the last people on earth who would care about something like that.

They are among the most cut-throat people on TV and they routinely remind their talent that they're replaceable. For every Screamin' A who does make bank, you have a dozen of Skip Bayless, Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen, etc. types that move on elsewhere for more money and (for the most part) see their star dimmer.

It’s a complete joke how little they get paid, it was at least, somewhat acceptable when fighters could actually get their own sponsorships and make a decent living, greed took that away and now, unfortunately, many fighters basically fight to break even

UFC 265 in two days. A real meh card considering it's a PPV, but it's still got some good fights.

If you want some reading material, this is pretty good:

not sure why u called it meh- some fun fights and it’s a banger night so far like I thought it’d be

It's a mediocre card for a PPV. The fact that most of the fights turned out to be good doesn't change that at all.

every insider I was listening to thought that this was a good and deep card. Tbh - even the headliner is pretty kick ass. Either one could be a champ in 4 months and then all the sudden the Avg fan would see how good this fight should be if someone has a belt going into it

Lewis is the worst good fighter, or the best bad fighter of all time. Gane looks so much better than him.

He’s hard to take down with one punch literal power which makes him interesting to watch. Just tires out too easily. He was taking a bunch of deep breathes before that finish

Yeah, we all love his jokes and shit but as a fighter he's kind of trash....but with launch pad power in that right hand that he keeps catching people with.

No gas tank, no secondary weapon, no defence, no strategy, etc.

Talent-wise, Derrick Lewis is barely a regional scene fighter.

But, he's a big heavyweight with (quite literally) legendary punching power, and that's been enough to get him two title shots in the UFC against two fighters who will go down as all time greats, DC & Gane.

It speaks levels to the lack of talent in the heavyweight division, because all the top level heavyweight athletes aren't trying to be fighters, they're trying to be basketballers or footballers. You have the occasional heavyweight wrestler that transitions to MMA, but there ain't many of 'em. Kyle Snyder, one of the best heavyweight wrestlers on earth, has talked about going into MMA since the end of the 2016 Olympic games, so we'll see.

In no other division would the top fighters be flooded with so many older people for so long. Even now, if you look at the UFC's heavyweight rankings, only three of them are still in their 20s. I'd be willing to bet that half of the current top-15 is going to be there for the foreseeable future, there ain't no backup coming.

Compare the talent in the Fiziev - Green fight and the Lewis - Gane fight. Those don't even look like people in the same league.

I think their investment into Africa will be a game changer for the division. Will get some of those natural heavyweights - but from a third world country where football, basketball etc may be seen as the harder route to go to make some decent money. Think this will also help with the woman’s divisions to get more depth of talent.

Their investments into Europe, North America and asia - there are other options or just not that size/athletic (ie Asia) like the guys that will be coming from Africa.

And yes, I’m talking in stereotypes #racist
