I think he fits in terms of age and would be a consequential improvement to the roster in the 7-8 range.

I don't get the non-fit argument. Age, positions and style are fit. It really boils down to trade and contract cost. Are we a PLD away from the Cup? Of course not, we finished bottom five, but by that logic we would never sign or trade for anyone until about 5 years for now if everything goes well.

From what I gather, in addition to the offensive production, he plays a heavy game and is excellent at puck possession and retention. This last part is a big deal for the Habs.

PLD is not coming here....
But let's say he wants 8M x 7 yrs (so max deal), you do it.....not because he's worth it, but because you won't be able to find another center of his caliber ''that wants to come here''.
Reality of MTL.....you need to pay a bit more to get talent.....PLD is not a top center....he's a #2 C at best.....but Suzuki-Dach-PLD is a great trio for MTL.....i doubt we find anyone better that accepts to come here, unless we draft a C (Carlsson-Smith).
Also, I don't think Dach is a center.....5 yrs into his NHL career, he hasn't established himself as a center....he'll be a great winger on a top line....which means PLD becomes more important for us.
Am I the only one that hasn't been impressed with PLD's career so far ? It's like i'm still waiting for him to take that next step.....

Depends what your expectations are.
If your expecations of him were to be a 1st line center, then yeah, it's been disappointing. If your expectations of him were to be a 2nd line center? I think he's been just that.

PLD will be a steady 60-70+ pts player w Habs, once the cap starts accelerating up in 2-3 years, $8M will be todays $6M player.
ROR surpassed 60-pts twice over the last 7-years of his expiring $7.5M AAV deal.
Also, MSLs “concept” is based on positionless hockey which both he & Hughes preached big time in minor leagues, and PLD fits that to perfection whether he starts puck drop on LW with Suzuki / Caufield or C w Slaf / Dach

But the idea that at 8 mil " you wont be able to find anything better to come here " is the reason you dont do it
If the Habs were the Devils on the cusp of true contenders you think about it .
Reminds me of the Leafs pushing the poker chips to the middle of the table with JT and they had a hell of a better base 5 years ago

He’s a top 6 guy who might be available at as rebate. No one is saying he’s CMD or willing to pay that much.
Dach? No. 9M/year? No. But it would be professional malpractice for HuGo not the give it a shot.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The “Dubois-to-Montreal” speculation hasn’t been as heated as it was a couple of weeks ago. That doesn’t mean a trade to the Canadiens isn’t possible. However, it appears they’ve made it clear that they’re comfortable with Dubois heading somewhere else if the Jets asking price is too high. The same applies to his contract.

PLD isn't your typical late 20's-early 30's pending free agent. He's not yet 25 so adding him to our young core does fit. It all comes down to how much he gets paid but we would be getting him for his prime years, not his past-prime years.

He quit on Tortorella, which hardly makes him unique. Most players in the league have no use for that dinosaur. And for most of last season he was the Jets best player. He never "quit" on them, he merely said he didn't want to resign with the Jets because Winnipeg is a shithole. Again, that opinion is hardly an outlier. Most players don't want to live in Winnipeg.
Simply put, I am not willing to condemn him based on his dislike of John Tortorella and the city of Winnipeg because that just makes him the same as about 98% of all players in the NHL. But 98% of NHL players never had to play for Torts or play in Winnipeg on a full-time basis like PLD has had to.
