Just for shits and giggles, it would probably push our current first line to a second line and replace it with a line of
Demidov/Dach-Crosby-Laine.

Of course he’s “lost a step,” he’s almost 40. But by “losing a step” he’s merely gone from generational to elite. To be fair, I don't see that Crosby has lost a step. He could be realgud for a few more years yet.on an up and coming team like ours, he could still be a needle mover.
No, there are still plenty of questions about D. I'd argue even more than what we have in net. With Demi and our D core the only questions would be in net.
2025-2026 is the year to start looking at what direction Hugo moves forward withLots of love if on defense, but lots of candidates as well, but we’ll need some answers soon.
Matheson will make Matheson expendable with his age, his contract status and what he'll want in his next contract.
He'll be 32 when his contract expires and if he continues with similar production, he's going to be asking for a 6+ year, $9M+ contract.
Anyone willing to give him that? Because I'm not.
Re-signing a player with the main reason being "we don't have anyone to replace him!" is a terrible way to run a team.
No chance I resign him , but Habs may get another Suzuki type return with a returning D to bridge before the kids take overSomeone needs to make Matheson expandable. I know he already is for many of you but someone needs to take his 25 minutes and 62 points. Otherwise it will be a relative failure and we might have to consider resigning him.
Is Xhekaj a top 4 or bottom 6? Same with Mailloux.
Is Hutson a top 4 or a bottom 6 specialist?
Can Reinbacher be top pair or second pair?
What is Engstrom?
Is Barron even a NHL defenseman?
I don't like any player to the point where I won't consider getting rid of him if something better comes along or their effectiveness begins to ebb. Players are just a means to an end. Apart from what they can do to help my team win championships I really don't care if they live or die. They're a roster spot, a number on the back of a jersey. They only become meaningful in retrospect, after they have delivered the championships I demand from them. You’re right of course, I just like the player and I’m trying to find justifications or scenarios to keep him, but those are not very realistic.
Gallagher is the worst discount I have seen in years , contract was an albatross on day 1You can always predict what a player's going to get based on comparables. Some players will give discounts, sure, but they're not giving up half of their salary and/or leaving significant term on the table. Reminder for those who forgot, Gallagher gave this team a "discount" when he signed his contract, he wanted an extra year before settling on 6 years instead of 7.
If I'm Matheson's agent, again assuming he has two more seasons at ~60 points, I point directly to Brady Skjei (7 years x $7M) as the starting point. Skjei's a 30 year old LHD that averages 40-45 points each year, and Matheson would have three straight 60 point seasons. From there, you can point to better players making more money: Mikhail Sergachev (8 years x $8.5M), Jake Sanderson (8 years x $8.05M), Dougie Hamilton (7 years x $9M), John Carlsson (8 years x $8M).
There's no possible scenario where I'd feel comfortable giving him another contract.
Either he remains really good and he asks for the moon, we don't have the money to give him what he wants, or he regresses back to the mean from his time in Florida/Pittsburgh, and he'll be an overpaid player on his retirement contract.
