Shane Wright

McDavid
15 years old - 63 games - 25g, 41a for 66 points
16 years old - 56 games - 28g, 71a for 99 points
17 years old - 47 games - 44g, 76a for 120 points

Wright
15 years old - 58 games - 39g, 27a for 66 points - actually a bit better than the mcdavid numbers
16 years old - no games
17 years old - 63 games - 32g, 62a for 94 points - mcdavid was a bit better at 16 years old then wright at 17

Wright is no mcdavid - but what did the missed year do?
There are really good players that are not McDavid.....

Nugent Hopkins

15 years old - 5 games - 2g, 4a for 6 points
16 years old - 67 games - 24g, 41a for 65 points
17 years old - 69 games - 31g, 75a for 106 points - so similiar to wright

I am guessing Wright is somewhere in the middle - but is it closer to nuge or mcdavid

i am not a fan of the comparison to bergeron - as he is a unicorn - if it turns out that way - sweet but people also thought every big guy was the next Lucic
I doubt that Wright will be as good defensively as Bergeron. But he will be a solid 200 foot player with elite scoring and playmaking ability. Better than the Nooge but not McDavid.

turns out Lucic wasn't even the next Lucic

Still don't get why RNH has not been able to be a top 10-20 player consistently in this league.....he has all the tools/talent.

My only explanation is that he shy's away from physical play....

He was Lucic enough in 2011 when the Bruins won the Cup. The rest of his career is all gravy. He was never fast enough to remain dominant. You can't hit what you can't catch and taking dumb penalties is a fast track to the press box, even for the Bruins. He's a smarter player now, which simply means he knows his limitations. But having to pick one's spots also means that for long stretches you are pretty much inconsequential to the outcome of the game.

for shits and giggles

bedard
15 years old - 15 games - 12 goals, 16 assists - 28 points
16 years old - 62games - 51g, 49a - 100 points
the most impressive thing though is that his next closest teammate only had 69 points - whereas mcdavid never led his team in points (in any OHL season)

that isn't what he does

For some reason, they love him here in Edmonton. Maybe it's because he never bad-mouthed the city and seems happy to spend his entire career as an Oiler. But he's a player that always leaves you wanting more, like he's holding something back. Maybe he was never as good as his draft position. But since the arrival of McJebus and Draisaitl, RNH has been pretty much the invisible man and he seems happy to be in the shadows. I guess part of being an elite player is not shying away from the spotlight. Not chasing it necessarily, but not avoiding it either.

Tavaras
draft year
56 games - 104 points

and also keep in mind wright was much better in the second half than the first (i am calling it covid effects)

care to show your work?
I'm not so sure he hits 90 points unless the Habs really build into a contender. Even then, 80-85 would be the ceiling. I think he can be a point a game player in the NHL. 70 points should be his baseline once he's established.

I just think Cooley doesn't have the surety of a guy like Wright. Maybe I'm wrong but I take the consensus #1. Timmins and his "I'm smarter than all of you" picks is gone.
Wright is ranked #1 on pretty much every list I've seen. I'm struggling to find a reputable list that doesn't have him at the top. For months I've been hearing that it's wide open and that there is a lot of disagreement over who is the top dog, but then I look at the rankings and every list has Wright at #1 so I don't know. Maybe there were some conversations earlier in the season but they are all now coalescing around Wright. Seems to me that the only pro scouts who aren't high on Wright are the ones who work for teams that weren't getting the first overall pick to begin with.

cooley seems to have the talent but he lacks production
- probably has the higher ceiling but also the lower floor

i think part of the issue is that he was expected to do even bigger things this season but he came back to the pack
but he has never trailed at any point
