Tech Thread

I just joined Threads to spite you whiny bitches. And Elon.

I noticed a blacked out van just pulled up across the street but I'm sure it's totally unrelated.

It's not the answer people are going to want to hear, but twitter will die from self inflicted wounds mostly and from smaller cuts by a handful of competitive apps plus changing usage patterns of it's users but will likely never fully replaced by one platform other than itself after the bankruptcy is handled.

The vision of a glorious rush to a new Elon-less twitter copy is nice, but it's unlikely. Disillusioned users will distribute their time towards a collection of other platforms, and not one singular replacement.

Something I think we've all (myself included) kind of missed to this point is that twitter's business model was okay just okay to begin with. Being at barely breakeven despite the platform being mature and fairly well monitized already kind of speaks to the weakness of twitter. You could alway turn up the advertising dial to 11 (or as high as you could before it harmed engagement rates) and find some different value add stuff to throw into a subscription service (twitter blue...but not fuckwitted) to juice the balance sheet, but I don't think there was a Meta/Google online advertising gold mine waiting to be tapped into there.

Yeah but people eventually centralize.

If threads can't fill the twitter gap something eill eventually. The important thing is that elon's vision dies a painful death.

They pulled 70 million users in 24-36 hours….that’s not a vision of a glorious rush, it is one.

18 years in Twitter is like 450m?……and most importantly it primarily needs trusted news breakers to have it as a focal point, which so far it appears it’s well on its way to becoming.

Clicking on your threads app instead of your twitter app isn’t a very dramatic change for people if their intent is largely based on a craving for dopamine delivered via fresh breaking news.

Many people just want something closer to the 2019 version of twitter back, that can successfully mainline them their information hits….and right now Threads is well positioned to be a better version of that than 2023 Twitter is, imo.

Threads has a big test in front of them, which is when the next major world event happens….and people want up to the second updates…can it be the a option for getting verified reliable sources giving them the accurate breaking information drip they crave.

Each major event will be a proper Pepsi challenge, and if Threads passes that test…and subsequent similar A/B tests, they’ll be off to the races.

It all trickles down off of that, imo.

Eh, 70 million people opening up a new account to check it out is not the same thing as 70 million regular users.

Maybe, but it's going to be a significantly worse version of 2019 twitter, with Meta execs already coming out and saying that they're not really interested in fostering a place that does what people want Threads to become. Meta wants all the benefits of twitter (ad revenue, engagement) without doing the actual heavy lifting necessary to be twitter.

It took ChatGPT roughly 60 days to reach 100m users….Threads will accomplish that in as many hours.

It’s blowing every other app away historically in terms of instant adoption…

70m users that quickly is bonkers….and with instagram having over a billion users across the platform who has such a low barrier to entry, their long term growth potential looks pretty rosy.

They only need to become demonstrably superior to current twitter, (to become the defacto go-to for breaking news….and they’re very well positioned to have a shot at it.

Literally the top of my timeline as I go back to Threads, is zeke reposting this…😆

Nothing sucks out your soul, quite like seeing a fresh original take of yours, posted hours before you voiced yours.….eliminating any dibs you may have believed you had. 😑

Eh, let's not act like it's a startup that came out of nowhere, it's an offshoot of a platform with 2.4 billion users. Threads isn't Threads, it's Instagram.

As for it becoming a go to for breaking news, I'm going to say that it doesn't. Meta doesn't seem to have the appetite to run a news & politics driven app. There's a bunch of heavy lifting involved in running a platform that became the defacto referee for social conversation. Meta very clearly wants no part in wearing the stripes. Twitter wasn't a news app, it was the frontlines in the culture war and news was the steady stream of weapons and artillery.

They're flat out going to torpedo whatever the twitter diaspora wants Threads to be.

Trusting Meta to nurture Threads into anything resembling pre Elon twitter is just naive, and they have their hands on all the fucking levers.

They want the celebs and cultural icons, not the ukraine war OSINT channels, the investigative reporters, progressive political voices, etc.

Yeah, the Threads “new users” totals are a little deceiving. It’s not a brand new service that new-to-Meta users are signing up to en masse. It’s essentially just an extension to an existing wildly popular app.

...except they're actually signing up for it.....and 70m over that time frame blows away any adoption of any other app in history? (if im not mistaken).

...seems silly to try and dismiss that as insignificant.

Maybe I don’t understand how it works, since I don’t have an account.

But do you actually sign up for a seperate Threads account? As in enter in your name, e-mail, pick a username, etc. Or do you just straight-up sign in with your existing Instagram account and your username & info are all the same?

I consider it a sign of discontent with twitter, not a sign of approval of threads.

Twitter's base is so sick and tired of Elon's shit, they were willing to check out Facebook's competing product. It's not going to be what they want it to be though.

You know how you go to nearly any website service, and are asked to sign in via Google, Apple, Facebook, etc?......its basically that except you're doing so via your instagram account.
