Tech Thread

Just let me curate own lists thats all i need.

it's all coming....he listed a bucketload of things that they're working on adding.

strikes me Zuck must have wanted to capitalize on the ideal mark entry point of Elon's throttling of twitter views.....and kickstarted it earlier than they'd originally planned. I may be wrong tho.

Eh, there's going to be algo fuckery to punish the poli content that you actually want from Twitter. You'll be able to get a face full of whatever Lebron's promoting today though. None of their products give control of what's seen to the user, they're not going to start now with by far their least financially viable product.

They're flat out going to torpedo whatever the twitter diaspora wants Threads to be.

“I don’t want to lean into hard news at all. I don’t think there’s much that we can or should do to discourage it on Instagram or in Threads, but I don’t think we’ll do anything to encourage it,” Mr. Mosseri said.

They might...but he said they just aren't going to chase it.

.....but no one chased it on twitter either, it happened organically. If the news breakers go there (and so far they're all signing up en masse)...the people looking for that breaking news will follow.

Whether they can reach the critical mass to be the defacto go-to....is to be determined..

He's not going to say the quiet part out loud. Their hands are on all the levers. If they don't want certain content to get boosted, it doesn't get boosted.

Twitter was in a fundamentally different situation. Twitter was bleeding cash and had to balance the books eventually, any traffic was good traffic and they were incentivized to just let whatever happens, happen. Meta is a behemoth with more money than god. Mosseri has very clearly outlined what he sees as the risks factors in threads becoming the next twitter in the other quoted posts and he clearly doesn't think it's worth it.

They want the celebrities. They want Lebron, the Kardashians, etc, etc. They don't want the politics, the NSFW stuff, etc. They want all of the stuff that makes twitter boring and none of the stuff that makes twitter good and if the good stuff causes them headaches, they'll move the levers on the algo as required.

The list of things they're currently working on adding, per Mosseri:

- a Threads home feed that only contains posts from accounts you follow.....

- post editing.

- ability to have multiple thread accounts, and easy switching between them.

- and whatever this means....

"Meta has been much more outspoken about its future plans to integrate Threads with ActivityPub, the decentralized social media protocol that provides the basis of rival microblogging service Mastodon. Eventually, the hope is that Threads users will be able to interact with those on other ActivityPub-based services. Support for the protocol could even allow a Threads user to take their audience with them if they ever leave the service, Mosseri told my colleague Alex Heath in a recent interview."

One of the next big Threads trends we’ll be seeing is screencap posts comparing engagement from bigger and bigger accounts on Twitter vs Threads.

Will be fascinating to track how the movement is for big Habberman/Woj/Shams/Schaffer/Fabrizio breaking news bombs.

….and how long it takes before one of the big names sees more engagement on them on Threads.

Lists, bitch.

I think we might have to wait a bit longer for that, just because it’s a slightly more niche feature….but I’m thinking if multiple accounts comes soon, I’ll at least be able to have the ability to flip between a sports based feed, and a news one.

A jerry-rigged macro curation, if you will.
