Tech Thread

Without being able to curate my own lists i'm never going to be able to use it like i did twitter. Hopefully they add it.

Its completely nutso how few likes and replies tweets from prominent accounts seem to be getting the past couple days.

The only accounts that seem to still be getting normal interactions are euro-based tweets.

Threads is fucking great.

Has it's flaws, but already feels well on it's way to replacing Twitter as the place to go to get your up to the second breaking news from trusted sources.

Most of the complaints I've seen feel rather off base too....they're either largely irrelevant, easily fixable already, or are easy to see resolved by Meta in the long run.

OG twitter had its faults, Zuck obviously has his....(trying to toe the line between profits/democracy that he completely blew it in 15/16)....but in a world where nothing is free, and our data is largely the accepted currency we use to pay for these services....Zuck at least tries like OG twitter to have the ship directed in the quasi-right direction.

Musk on the other hand bought twitter for one of two primary reasons imo, (a) To buy some power to influence elections going forward, towards whoever would give him the least regulation/most subsidies...or (b) to attempt to cozy up to the right to expand his customer base for Tesla which I believe was previously around 70% well educated liberals, or some shit.

....in the course of all that, he obviously destroyed what value Twitter had to most of us and turned it into an unrecognizable cesspool. Choosing between that or Zuck, isn't much of a decision imo. And like it or not, unlike Mastodon, Bluesky, or whoever else has shot their shot....no one can compete with the kind of instant large scale adoption Threads just pulled off.....the race has been run imo, and Threads will be the undisputed king we all use, as the twitter replacement.

My main complaints about the platform are definitely fixable (not being able to curate your own feed & not being able to view your feed chronologically).

I don’t think they ever will be fixed though, considering that’s how Facebook’s feed has worked as well for a very long time and the company doggedly refuses to change it.

I recognize those might not be deal-breakers for most, but they are for me.

Plus I just really fuck’n don’t want to sign up for an Instagram account. Would be really nice if they could split off Threads into a standalone app/website.

We’re united in this. Let me fucking see the posts from the people I follow. That’s all I want.

Yeah, not loving the sounds of this to start

- no desktop to enhance privacy protection
- slave to their algo

I'll just pack my scuba tank, enjoy watching elon sink Twitter and wait for whoever takes it over after bankruptcy in 2024 to realize that it was never broken and the easiest way to create 20 billion dollars in value is simply to take it back to what it was before Elon.

I don't use them anymore but don't facebook and insta have "chronological" and "following" options?

If there is, in true Meta fashion it's buried 37 layers deep in their menu/settings system. Probably right next to any of their privacy opt out toggles.

not that I am aware of. although I mostly stopped using both too so not an authority. but part of the reason I stopped using my insta was that my feed became fucking junk, rather than a chronological summary of what my friends were posting (and I had no ability to modify this)

I’ve never used Insta, so I can’t say, but with Facebook—nope.

Your news feed is a random mish-mash of people from your friends list, pages you liked and (mostly) content from people or pages you don’t follow but that Facebook thinks you might be interested in, all showed to you in non-chronological order.

You can block individuals or pages you don’t want to see in your news feed, but that won’t decrease the amount of “suggested” content in your feed, because Facebook will just find other stuff to show you. No way to change it.

the newsfeed devolved into absolutely useless shit. and ads. made the platform unusable for me.

so yeah, fuck Meta, fuck Zuck, and fuck threads.

but I would still cheer for Zuck in a cage match against Elon.

Privacy died some time shortly after truth. I say fuck it and let poor Zuck earn a few bucks from harvesting data. THE MAN HAS TO FEED HIS FAMILY!

Next time you're on the run from the authorities, just grab a prepaid burner.

Nah, I'm good.

I'm alright enough with some limited amounts of them following me around the internet to see what ads appeal to a deviant, but they can fuck off with needing to needing full GPS access to know exactly where I am physically to use their mobile app. Unlimited camera and microphone access regardless if I'm using the app or not at the time, etc, etc, etc.
