Tech Thread

He has WhatsApp still the one. I know there are security concerns but I use it on the reg and haven’t been arrested

pretty sure WhatsApp still dwarves Signal. like not remotely close.

Ahh, true.

Bad example, but the point still stands. Bluesky’s rollout is increasingly reminiscent of Google+ to me.

Tons of hype and disenchantment with the previous platform (Facebook), but Google kept it exclusive and slow-rolled it to the point where everyone lost interest.

definitely a risk. especially if threads takes off in the interim. seems like most folks are fed up with twitte and just waiting for a viable alternative...

Man, the more I read about Threads, the less I’m able to see any appeal to it whatsoever.

  • Instagram account required to sign up.

  • A Zuckerberg product, with all the baggage around privacy and content moderation/promotion that comes with that.

  • No way to view a feed made up entirely of the people you’ve chosen to follow instead of a random mish-mash of people the algorithm figures you should be interested in.

  • No way to view your feed chronologically, instead of the algorithm showing you content in what it’s decided its order of importance.

yeah, I stopped using insta when they introduced the stupid algo feed, so don't see why I would switch back fore more of the same.

Understood. But whether it’s a deliberate strategy or due to technical limitations, I think the result will be the same. Bluesky’s going to get left in the dust.

For a mass migration from one platform to a single other platform to hit critical mass, you have to be in a position to take in all the refugees from the previous site.

Like Myspace to Facebook, Digg to Reddit or WhatsApp to Signal.

Threads is fucking great.

Has it's flaws, but already feels well on it's way to replacing Twitter as the place to go to get your up to the second breaking news from trusted sources.

Most of the complaints I've seen feel rather off base too....they're either largely irrelevant, easily fixable already, or are easy to see resolved by Meta in the long run.

OG twitter had its faults, Zuck obviously has his....(trying to toe the line between profits/democracy that he completely blew it in 15/16)....but in a world where nothing is free, and our data is largely the accepted currency we use to pay for these services....Zuck at least tries like OG twitter to have the ship directed in the quasi-right direction.

Musk on the other hand bought twitter for one of two primary reasons imo, (a) To buy some power to influence elections going forward, towards whoever would give him the least regulation/most subsidies...or (b) to attempt to cozy up to the right to expand his customer base for Tesla which I believe was previously around 70% well educated liberals, or some shit.

....in the course of all that, he obviously destroyed what value Twitter had to most of us and turned it into an unrecognizable cesspool. Choosing between that or Zuck, isn't much of a decision imo. And like it or not, unlike Mastodon, Bluesky, or whoever else has shot their shot....no one can compete with the kind of instant large scale adoption Threads just pulled off.....the race has been run imo, and Threads will be the undisputed king we all use, as the twitter replacement.

One thing I love about threads is that I have yet to see BS trending topics like #JoeBidenCrimeFamily or a meaningless #KirkCousins trend that has more to do with them knowing I like the Vikings than any actual news.
