The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

"Stabbing at will" = calling awful play "average", and still blaming the defense more

They're beating the "trade Johnsson/Kapanen/Kerfoot" for "insert randing RHD" drum hard today. Not a single mention of even upgrading on Hutch anymore.

I’m not trying to rail on him for the mental disorder stuff. To the contrary, I’m saying he should avoid this market because they will crucify him when he falters. And then I don’t know how the guy will be able to perform between the pipes. You can point to softer treatment of goalies, but a quieter guy like Freddy invites that. Lehner who is a much louder character might invite the opposite.

Anyway, regardless of Lehner or anyone else, I still prefer to ride it out with Freddy. He’s gotten us close. Get over the first round hump and I think he’ll fly. It’s all about the confidence.

- The only time goalies get crucified in Toronto is when they're literally the worst in the league for multiple seasons running and give up obviously hilarious goals on the regular. This might be the easiest major market in the league to be a goalie. This is not a new thing either, it's been baked into the pysche of the city for decades.

- Freddy has never gotten us "close", in fact he's the single biggest reason we've never gotten close. I don't see any evidence that dragging him kicking and screaming through the first round will lead to him "flying". I've posted his monthly numbers recently, he just doesn't "fly" very often in a month that isn't November.

Well, you can forget some of the epic playoff performances he put in in non-game 7 situations, and each time with kids in front of him and experienced teams like Boston and Washington on the other side, and just let the elimination game stand as his playoff resume. But I recall he was excellent for much of those series. He did get us close.

He has a playoff legacy of giving up hilariously bad goals at the worst times in Toronto and regularly being the 2nd best goalie on the ice.

If we've gotten close to anything, it's because his team has dragged him kicking and screaming to get there.

Here's a taste of his legacy

Thoughts on Josh Manson? 2 years left at 4.1 per. Was pretty bad last year but seems to be having a better season this year on first glance.

I think you make a very good point sir. It might be a very, very tough place for him to play in. Good point.

But, he is playing in a pretty serious urban center right now and flourishing Chicago is my favourite American city. Great city, but its a hot spot too bro.

We have a lot of talent, and I wouldn't be unhappy with sacrificing a nice piece to have normal Fred and Lehner, might be young Sawchuk and Bower, all over again.

I just don't want that piece to be Kapanen. Guy just wakes up for the big moments and gets sleepy during the regular season.

But as Mindz keeps positing. You have to make nice moves in a sell high period. Every GM in the league knows that Dubas is on the hot seat again.

Sell high. ALways sell high and try to buy as low as you can.

Let Johnsson for example score a hattrick and sell him that night.

That’s a bad one, sure. And there are others, but don’t pretend he wasn’t awesome during other parts of the series to get us to that point.

I was looking earlier. Feels like unless he’s doing something incredible on the intangible side of things, he’s someone we’d pay a lot to get and not get nearly as much in return.

Manson like so many others potentially available doesnt move the needle enough for me.

Petry is the only guy I see who is within reach that can jump in and have a massive impact right away.

Manson

He did have tougher usage but not enough to make that big a difference.

If I had to pinpoint the culprit - it seems like last year was the only year he didn't play fulltime with Lindholm, and split time equally with Fowler....

W/lindholm: 48.9cf%, 47.5xgf%
W/Fowler: 42.9cf%, 38.9xgf%

Yeah, that looks like the bigger difference.....which ain't a good sign.

But still the numbers are realgud overall.

Chalk this up to connect the dots. Teams that are in need of a rebuild that have something the Leafs need. Its the easy route

I more curious if he gets out ahead of everyone else and pulls a move off well in advance to the deadline like last year

Petry '20: B+ qoc, 0.84ap/60, 55.7cf% (+2.8), 55.9xgf% (+3.5)
Petry '19: B qoc, 1.02ap/60, 55.9cf% (+2.4), 53.2xgf% (-2.0)
Petry '18: B qoc, 0.62ap/60, 52.2cf% (+3.5), 52.8xgf% (+3.0)

And pretty much carrying around junk beside him the whole time.

Of all those middling names he's likely the best.
