The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

McGran posts a shitty article about a potential goalie controversy which was expected but even more fun are the knights coming to freddys rescue

When will these guys accept that he has beem struggling for much longer than the care to admit

That dumbass got caught in shitty takes that backup goalies don't matter (I didn't read it but he wrote a 90 page essay on why the leafs shouldn't get a backup) and now his new thing is Campbell = hutch because they have similar numbers to start their leafs career. But the second take is a result of the first. He's just really commited to it because of his thesis that he wrote on the subject.

Seems like I have managed to unfollow the worst parts of leafs Twitter. I have none of that convo on my feed.

we can't pay this guy 6 million. we're better off sticking with the cheaper Campbell and continue the search via the draft and trade for an upgrade.

With the expansion draft coming - there is going to be some targets for picking off a goalie to replace andersen...right? Please let this be right :)

Well that Jeff guy is just weird. I follow him because he fascinates me as a human being. Guy consistently has mental breakdowns and some weird contrarian takes. When people challenge him he whines that everyone hates him. It's electric entertainment.

But yeah his new thing is that it's hard to be a goalie in Toronto because we run everyone out of town. Which is insanely true if you pretend he said the exact opposite of that.

What goalie in recent memory was a good starter elsewhere soon before or soon after failing here?

Definitely a big loss.

Maybe Ceci's absence is even hurting us a little.

But the kids are just getting their feet wet. I expect they'll improve by some relatively significant measure every 10-15 games or so.

There has been a bit of a debate lately on twitter amongst the nerds of Reilly being expendable and the near future being the time to strike on dealing him

Maybe, but there's so many goalies hitting free agency over the next few summers that I don't know if it's worth giving up assets

2020: Khudobin, Francouz, Halak, Lehner, Talbot, Markstrom, Greiss, Crawford

All have been somewhere in the range of good to really good this season. Some are more true backup than 1B at this point.

-Of that group I find Lehner the most interesting obviously. Lehner/Campbell would be pretty ideal and I don't know if there are that many suitors for Lehner out this this summer. Most of the playoff/bubble teams have their starting jobs sorted, or at the minimum, locked up with term and money.
-Francouz is a super duper dark horse there. Has played well enough (.925%) that he probably should have stolen more starts from Grubauer this season (.916%). His track record across all professional levels is very good. .918 as a AHL starter last season, video game numbers in the KHL the few seasons previous.
-Talbot has had something of a bounce back season (and also should have stolen more starts from Rittich) but I don't know if I'd trust that he's "back" after his two grim shit shows before this season.
-Vancouver is going to overpay Markstrom to keep him but if some reason that flops, we should be interested at the right term/price.

If for some stupid reason we just trot Freddy out there again next season, and we're looking at the following UFA group

2021: Rask, Binnington, Dubnyk, Raanta, Reimer, Grubauer

- Rask might be worth a short term punt, but I highly doubt Boston just doesn't re sign him unless he falls off the planet next season
- How good is Binnington? Fucked if I know. World devourer last season, Freddyesque this season. He doesn't make it to free agency if he devours worlds again. If he doesn't, what the fuck is he?
- Dubnyk might be long done by then...grim season this year, but if he bounces back next year he might be worth a short term go.
- Raanta can't stay healthy, but when he's healthy he's been really good. Would prefer if we were looking at him as a cheap 1B rather than 1A.
- Reimer should still be a fully functional 1B/Backup by then. Can't be the top option, go fuck yourself Zeke.
- Grubauer has been a competent if unspectacular 1A in Colorado. They'll probably pay to extend him before he ever hits free agency. If we're dumb and we roll Freddy out there next season, and we're looking at someone to take the top side of the schwartz in a platoon with Campbell, he'd do.

Because they struggle with QoC and just don't understand it. Rielly is elite. Elite offensively, elite in transition and far better than his reputation suggests defensively.

I think it will go one of two ways. I don't think us flaming out again the first round is one of them - if it is, all bets are off.

But I would bet that Freddy finds his game soon, we roar into the playoffs, and we go deep. It just feels like that's going to happen. If it does, Freddy is the starter next year and we're having the exact same conversation then as we are now, except maybe with part of the discussion going to resigning Freddy after he had a superhero run.

The other possibility is that Freddy's shelf life is somehow actually over and we ride Campbell to success instead, sort of like a Murray in for Fleury situation from a few years back where Campbell just doesn't give back the net, we get into the playoffs, and go deep. In that situation, maybe the play that opens up for them is to trade Freddy off to another team in the offseason, use some of his money to bring in a guy to be the 1B to Campy, and then grab a UFA the next summer. With the savings, we can nab Pietrangelo.

My money is still on Freddy bouncing back. This team has been through a shitstorm this year that would've derailed the season of any other team between the parade of injuries, the Hutchrona virus, and the Babs firing. They've shown amazing resilience in being where they are at the moment. So if the team gets fully healthy going into the playoffs, it could be an unstoppable juggernaut. Which is what we were expecting before this roller coaster season started anyway.

Has Freddy every put together a long enough streak of elite numbers to suggest he can make a deep run?

He will essentially will have to outplay Rask and Vasilevskiy in the first two rounds. I am not overly confident in his ability to do that
