The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

I think some of us (including myself) are sleeping on him. Guy was turning into a real elite player in his last few games.. Was ppg for a bit and at a 50ish point pace on the season despite getting 0 pp time. That's not even remotely easy to do. In fact, it's god damn near impossible. I try to go longish term with him if I'm glasses because if he bets on himself on a 1 year deal there's a chance they have to give him some real coin the following year.

You never know, this pretty scary injury might push him to take the guaranteed money on a multi year deal.

Zeke. Game thread.

I like that Dubas said of Muzzin that he is a little bit old school which they needed and isn’t afraid to call the team out.... to me it’s a great sign that Dubas is willing to embrace the physical and emotional parts of the game going forward.

Dubas also speaks of the team being able to play a good team defence, but can’t seem to stay dialled in and do it consistently (sounds like his tool box goes well beyond the analytics and is willing to see the flaws past goaltending).... very much looking forward to what he does with this roster in the offseason knowing this.

The problem is that you've completely bought the narrative on Dubas instead of the words that actually come out of his mouth. His toolbox has never been limited to just analytics, and he's never dismissed the physical and emotional aspect of the game. He simply believes that your eyes lie to you (aka, short sample viewings are a bad way to measure anything), intelligent deployment of analytics are a better guide to decision making and that a player can't simply be physical, they have to be able to take care of the puck and you know, actually be able to play the game.

A lot of people have taken their narrative of how Dubas thinks/teambuilds and placed it overtop of the things Dubas has very clearly stated. They're now using this silliness to claim that he's changing his ways. The Muzzin trade was his first major trade as GM of the Leafs ffs.

Looking at Boston and TB, it often feels like their top line is really the only thing making them so good. Maybe our problem is that we’re not top heavy enough ironically.

Did I really leave you with the impression that I am promoting players that are just physical, and aren’t able to play the game?

Both teams are legitimately very good defensively.

All Strength Expected Goals Against (since Keefe era began)

Boston: 2.41 (3rd)
Tampa: 2.42 (4th)
Toronto: 2.60 (10th)

Most truly physical players that are left in the league can't play the game. The supporters of the "Moar grit" view of hockey tend to be scant on details of who they actually mean when they say grit.

Tampa first made the Cup finals (and 2nd round) 4 years after they drafted all of Stamkos/Hedman/Kucherov (6 after Stamkos/Hedman), and even missed the playoffs one year after that.

If, and thats the big IF, this is finally their year its 12 years after they drafted Stamkos, and 7 years after the Stamkos/Hedman/Kucherov core first played together at the NHL level.

Mirtle and co need to go away.

Mirtle has become a rage merchant like the rest.

Need more of this kind of thinking in this fan community. Everyone needs to lower expectations a bit....not saying that we need to roll over and accept shit effort, however, this process is a nightmare of complexity.
