The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

How do you have a worthwhile hockey discussion between two people with opposite opinions who just say "I watch the games" to support their argument with nothing else to support? It's a dead end. You might as well be in the comments section of a TSN article.

Wouldn’t that depend on your definition of worthwhile hockey discussion? Some people prefer watching hockey instead of reach for the stars math competitions.

Stats are great indicators but they’re seriously boring as fuck when incessantly discussed. Sometimes people just want to talk about a nice play.

All of us watch the games... that's why you need something else. Or else it's a boring as fuck conversation that goes nowhere.

I have had plenty of interesting conversations about hockey that weren’t filled with someone copy and pasting all the analytics they can find.

Don’t get me wrong..... I think they have a use.... but for the most part, we aren’t going to find anyone on one of these fan message boards who can use them properly with all the other factors that need to be considered.

Do both and see how they align after the game

Use it as a test to see how good your eye test is compared to a tracking model

Dellow and Barnes used to post on the same board not to long ago

And how many of those discussions didn't use, say, goals, points, or +/-?

… I'm saying the conversation reaches a dead end if both parties use nothing but the eye test.
I guess.
I can see the numbers not changing anything though...I guess what I'm saying is (and conversation means argument here) numbers don't suddenly stop the arguing.

lol...have you been here?

… for literally 20 years and the fact we don't just yell "watch the games" when we fight about our opinions is exactly why. Otherwise I can talk to my Uncle John on Facebook who thinks Nylander is a pussy and we should've drafted Ritchie.

He watches the games, y'know.

There are example of ignorance on both sides of that coin.

There’s guys like your uncle and guys who just copy paste stats without context.

Who is it you think is doing that here exactly?

I haven’t been here long enough to say really.

but I know it goes on a lot in general.

it’s the 2 ends of the spectrum...... guys who base everything on the eye test while dismissing the numbers and guys who just copy paste stats while dismissing what they see.

Funny thing is everyone who uses analytics watches games at least as closely, but actually probably even more closely.

Sure.... and people who use the eye test look at the stats as well.

The disconnect often comes when the eye test people are dismissive of the numbers (or vice versa)
