Ah, I forgot about that. I figured Freddy for sure gets LA since Campbell is going tonight, and then for sure would play his former team in Anaheim. Interesting set of circumstances.

So....if Campbell stands on his dick, do we finally get a goalie controversy?

Probably not, unfortunately.

I had hopes that Campbell might get a chance to run a bit after three pretty great starts, and then Keefe went and handed Freddie seven straight starts afterwards. The only wild card is if Freddie is nursing some kind of injury.

Thing is though, Freddy has been junk in those 7 starts. .888sv% and that was with one of the easier shutouts you're ever going to see thrown into the mix. .894 since he came back from injury (11 games), which is a mild improvement on his .881 in the 11 games prior to the injury I suppose, but at some point it has to stop being about getting Freddy "back on track", and about giving this team the best chance of winning. If Campbell keeps up being .915-.920 after a few more reps, Keefe has to make the right call as we move towards prepping for the playoffs.

If Campbell is playing behind the same team and putting up superior results, it gets harder and harder to defend Freddy, for anyone.

I hope you're right.

Going into the playoffs with Freddie still as our unquestioned starter gives me the same sense of hopelessness that I had coming into this season with Babcock still in place as our head coach.

Funny thing is "watch him play" usually actually means "plus/minus rating".

nowadays “watch him play” and copy pasting analytics, are both becoming the lazy way out

There is a reason even the most analytic minded managers still scout or use scouts..... It’s a much larger and complex puzzle than we will ever actually see solved on one of these fan forums.

I tend to think that the “eye test” is more of an alert to look into the analytics.... from there it’s knowing how they apply to that specific alert, and what other factors may be influencing the situation.

I can’t help but think that the analytics would be easier to apply if they played on Olympic sized ice where everything is kind of slowed down and spaced out.

true, but fyi, you won't find me copying and pasting those charts or even the numbers. i actually do some work to make sure they're put into good context.

Sure I get that.

At the same time some people put in similar effort watching players and comparing them to other players they watch.

I don’t think one or the other is the right way to look at it.... it’s a combination of both and most importantly knowing how they work together while factoring in emotion and injury.

as do I.

the difference is, I know there is no possible way that I, nor anyone else, can track every play on every shift of even one singe player and get a full picture of how effective is, let alone the entire league and be able to place all those players in a fair comparison to each other.

Agreed......and that right there really shows there is a lot of room for error on both sides.

ah yes, #bothsides.

but one side with one helluva lot more room for error than the other.

Hard to say.... opinions from watching vary by the person watching..... and the deep analytics are still relatively new and were first used more for really slow unemotional sports.

plenty of room for error on both sides when used by themselves.

How do you have a worthwhile hockey discussion between two people with opposite opinions who just say "I watch the games" to support their argument with nothing else to support? It's a dead end. You might as well be in the comments section of a TSN article.
