The Expansion Draft

which one are you getting? If he reverts back to his pre Panthers production then you miss out on a sure asset like Demers
You have to draft 14 forwards.

Marchessault is also a piece you can flip as early as thursday. What would a cap strapped team trade for a top 6/top 9 forward at 700k

There is also considerable speculation MIN has or will have deal with VGK to lay off Scandella/Dumba in exchange for a prospect.

Sure but Demers is a top four rhd. Arguably the best d that will be available. It's a no brainer really. You take him and run

If we trade Bozak, I'd be entirely down for Staal. Sign Kovalchuk, get a RHD (Demers would be nice) and it's a party

Kovy-Jesus-Nylander (**** me....)
JVR-Staal-Marner
Leo-Kadri-Brown
Does-It Really-Matter

Rielly-RHD
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Carrick

Staal for Bozak would be a nice upgrade (though I doubt the cost of adding him will be nice, unless it's a wash for whatever we get for Bozak), but I can't get behind this universal love among the posters here for Demers (he's nothing) or Kovy (he hasn't played the NHL game for years and I don't know if he can just pick up where he left off).

I'd like to add a core piece to the D, and Manson is by far the guy at the top of my list to add size, hits, and meanness. I'd give up a fair amount to get him, though it seems Anaheim may have already blocked everyone off from him.

If he's gone, I'm down with getting just any serviceable second pairing guy who doesn't make much and doesn't require much in trade.

And Marleau is my pick among the older forwards on a short deal.

I really wouldn't be rocking the boat too much with our moves this offseason. We have a great team and just need to strategically add a couple of pieces and give it a go again this year, with maybe another rookie or two worked into the lineup (the Swedes on D, Leipsic, Rychel, etc.).

I'm still kind of choked we didn't sign Staal last summer. 3 years X $3.5M was such a steal of a deal. Even without that offensive resurgence, he was still a big center with strong possession numbers & faceoff skills, with a Stanley Cup championship on his resume, and he would've been a clear upgrade on Bozak for less money.

If Minnesota's made a side deal to protect Scandella & Dumba, but not Staal, the Leafs should definitely be all over that. But if Vegas still does have the option to pick one of those defensemen, then the price to get them to take Staal and flip him to us would be way more than I'd want to pay.

If Minny has made a deal with Vegas, then that means Vegas isn't touching any of those pieces. There will be a specific guy that Vegas will be allowed to pluck that Minny doesn't care much about, plus whoever Minny sent to Vegas in the trade. So if Dumba isn't available, Staal won't be either, per their deal.

As for Staal, it wasn't in any way a given that he'd be an upgrade on Bozak. He looked completed toasted in Carolina and NYR, and appeared to have fallen off a cliff. Minny gambled with that signing, and it paid off.

It won't be, but he would be a monster upgrade. We would probably have the 2nd best group of C's in the NHL with him though.

He's a fringe #2 defender, you're sleeping on him.

or Kovy (he hasn't played the NHL game for years and I don't know if he can just pick up where he left off).

Why wouldn't he pick up more or less where he left off? We've seen him be excellent in the NHL in the past, and he's produced at similar levels to other guys who have made painless transitions from the KHL to the NHL in the last few years.

Yeah, they aren't trading him for anything reasonable.

I don't see the fit. We have tons of bottom 6 wingers.

This is just pure speculation on your part.

These deals could take many different forms:

"Lay off of player 'A', and we'll give you 'X'."

"Lay off of players 'A', 'B' & 'C', and we'll give you 'X'."

"If we give you 'X' & 'Y', we dictate who you take in the expansion draft".

Etc.

So, like I said, if the scenario that unfolds is that Staal is one of the players available on Minnesota's list, and Dumba and Scandella aren't, I would want the Leafs to seriously look into acquiring him. If not, then obviously it's a moot point.

How much would we really pay for Demers vs how much a team would pay for Marchessault?

I wouldn't give up much for Demers. He's solid but nothing special. Fringe #2 is being nice imo. Marche--whatever should have more value around the league as a cheap goal scorer or even to Vegas as a cheap goal scorer. I'd be taking March if i was Vegas.

I actually wouldn't mind Marleau on a short term deal if we were to move JVR. He is old but he's still got wheels. Still scored 27 goals last season. Can play center is needed(part time).

Top 4 RHD on a good contract gets a good haul.

Demers doesn't do anything flashy he's just a solid d man.

I would pay more for him then a potential flash in the pan

If you were Minny, would you make a trade without having it in stone as to how Vegas was plucking off you? I sure wouldn't.

It'd be insane if they paid them off to have them lay off Dumba, but then be allowed to still take Staal. Unless the compensation they gave them for Dumba isn't that much.

And then we go back to why Minny wouldn't just take Dumba. I just can't see the combo of what Minny trades to Vegas plus whatever Staal can be flipped for to = Dumba.

I think Staal's contract would have been worth protecting.. and the price just might be Dumba or Scandella. If there is a deal being made it might be to steer the Knights toward taking whichever defender Minny covets less.

Well the obvious answer is that every player that a team wants to protect costs them more. It could be "We won't take Dumba if you give us a 1st" "we won't take Dumba or Scandella if you give us a 1st and a 2nd" "we won't take Dumba, Scandella or Staal for your 2017 and 2018 1st."

Or any combination of picks and prospects. I really don't know what the costs will be... but the more players you want them to stay away from... the higher the price.

Current rumours/news making the rounds:

- Leafs and Knights have had talks concerning Dumba, and allegedly Colin Miller as well.
- Boyle and the Leafs have talked contract, Boyle smartly though has said it's between Lou and his agent and he ain't saying shit.

Yeah, I don't see why McPhee wouldn't operate this way.

The more players you want them to stay away from, the more you pay.
