Any team/GM that has agreed to give a first to keep certain players, are protecting whoever they want and basically dictating who Vegas takes.

No way Fletcher would give a 1st to keep Dumba, only to lose another available player.

don't think there are any restrictions on vegas trading a drafted player back to the team they were selected from.

remember, you can't trade future consideration under the cba and vegas has only picks on the small handful of players they have signed available for trade.

could be a situation where minny sends picks and/or prospects who are exempt from the draft to vegas in return for whoever is selected.
 
Absolutely.

Vegas statement is basically McPhee's way of saying, you can keep whoever you want on your rosters - but we want access to the players/picks that you didn't need to protect.

All fine and good, but Vegas also needs to balance this out with actually fleshing out a 25 man roster.
 
though, to be honest, if i'm mcphee i just take dumba and run. what's minny willing to give up to keep him? a likely mid to late first 1-2 years down the road? i'd rather take the 22 year old RHD coming off of b2b 10 goal seasons who was recently selected 7th overall.
 
Yea i'd be taking Dumba and building with him. 22 year old RHD coming off a good offensive season.

I hope we figure out a deal with Vegas and get Josh Manson. I'd be tempted to move our 1st this year for him. Our 1st is higher than the Ducks so that might be incentive enough over what the Ducks could offer to not take Manson. The Ducks are in a cap crunch coming up and will be hard pressed to keep Vatanen anyway. Make them lose Manson in expansion and then they eventually have to trade Vatanen to save cap money for extensions. You really weaken a divisional rival in the process here.

Some interesting names on the unprotected list. Vegas can ice a semi-competitive roster next season. With a few trades and FA signings they can be better off than a bunch of teams.

EDIT: Ducks don't have a 1st. Even better
 
If I'm them, I might give up Leivo if they take Lupul.

The assumption here would be that we have no room for Leivo (and I don't get the sense Babs cares much about him), and so we'd be giving them this asset (that they'd need to actually want of course) in exchange for taking Lupul off our hands.

But I doubt there's a deal to be made here.

Exactly. Dumba is gonna be better than any pick Minny can offer to McPhee, both now and years down the road. It's dumb to expose Dumba IMO.

As for Josh Manson, I'll gladly give up the 17th overall pick for him.
 
How good is the Leafs situation that the only remotely meaningful talent they exposed is the likes of Leipsic, Rychel and Marincin? Won't be losing any sleep over one of them gettting poached.

Really pleased to see him protect Leivo. Wasted asset to expose him.

Sure looks like the Leafs have a decent opportunity to fanagle a trade with LV for a RHD (Demers, Dumba, Manson ... nice).
 
NHL numbers saying the Knights have worked out deals with Columbus, NYI and Anaheim not to take certain players.
 
We lucked out with the timing of this expansion draft. With the possibility of another expansion draft in the next 5ish years(Quebec?) we might not be so lucky. Lots of things can change by that point so no sense worrying but it'll be interesting to see.

Definitely got lucky this time around. It would suck to lose a legit player like Vatanen, Dumba, Grubauer, Manson for nothing.

Cap-wise, the Leafs are in a good situation. Horton & Lupul may take up about $10.5M in cap space, but they can both be LTIR'd.

The only problem with LTIR cap space is that you can't use it to account for rookie bonuses. And the Leafs will be paying out a lot of those in the next few years, and as much as possible, may want to keep those rookie overages from rolling into the next year's cap.

That would be my only thought on why they might want to dump Lupul.

I thought the Leafs didn't even put those guys on LTIR last year cause they were never near the cap. Unless you think spending is dramatically increasing this year.

Yeah, true. I guess they haven't announced the overages yet, but if you have 4-ish m this year, and expect the same next year, then a contract like Lupul actually does count against you.

They never went over the cap, but they were right up against it. capfriendly puts then ending the season only 240k under the cap in the end.
 
If they are interested in moving Lupul it tells me they plan to bring in a good amount of salary over the off-season. Don't be surprised to see a few big moves out of this management group before training camp.
